Position Title: Vice President, Programs and Learning

Background:
Philanthropy Ohio is membership association of foundations, corporate contributions
programs, other organizations and individuals actively engaged in philanthropy in Ohio.
Philanthropy Ohio’s mission is to provide leadership for philanthropy in Ohio and enhance the
ability of members to fulfill their charitable goals
Members are community, family, private foundations, corporate contributions programs,
individuals, giving circles, government, federated funds including United Ways and other
grantmaking organizations. Incorporated in 1984, Philanthropy Ohio is a 501(c) (3)
organization headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, with a regional office (serving northern Ohio)
located in Cleveland. Our over 200 members collectively hold over $11 billion in assets from
which they award over $700 million in grants to nonprofits in a typical year. Philanthropy Ohio
is a member of the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers, the national umbrella
organization for the country’s 34 regional associations like ours that serve over 5000
philanthropic organizations.
Position summary:
The VP, Programs and Learning provides vision and oversight for all Philanthropy Ohio
educational programs through leadership of the staff education team and is personally
responsible to identify, develop and deliver programs and services to members throughout the
state. As a member of the senior leadership team, the VP, Programs and Learning helps
coordinate overall strategy for the organization. This is a full-time exempt position that reports
to the President and is based in the Columbus office.
Primary responsibilities:
Leadership in Programs and Learning
 Leads and supervises the staff education team as they develop and deliver high
quality, relevant and valuable educational programming, including core competency,
constituency, regional, funding interest, annual conference and all other Philanthropy
Ohio educational programming, based on best practices of adult learning
 Develops long term educational strategy to further the vision and mission of
Philanthropy Ohio
 Oversees the implementation of program delivery throughout the state
 Develops processes to evaluate programming
 Prepares budgets and monitors expenditures for all educational activities
 Ensures ongoing programmatic excellence
 Promotes the integration of educational programming into Philanthropy Ohio’s strategy
 Develops collaborative relationships with other program delivery organizations, utilizing
best practices and providing relevant content in specific areas
 Serves as Philanthropy Ohio’s point of contact with education-related philanthropic
affinity groups




Plans, develops and delivers signature annual learning program, (e.g. annual
conference, summer institute, annual forum)
Provides staff leadership and liaison to the Membership Services Committee and to ad
hoc committees as needed
Keeps up-to-date on local, state and national grantmaking and foundation policies,
procedures and practices
Identifies and develops strategies to meet current and emerging needs of Ohio’s
grantmakers and foundations
Administrative Responsibilities
 Serves and works collaboratively as a member of Philanthropy Ohio’s senior
leadership team
 Leads, coaches and develops high performance education team members
 Assists in developing and implementing, as part of the leadership team, a recruitment
and retention plan for all members
 Participates in the development of the annual work plan
 Demonstrates leadership and adherence to principles of Philanthropy Ohio staff
culture
 Leads fundraising activities related to educational events
Qualifications
 Direct experience in the philanthropic sector, community foundation experience
preferred
 Understanding of principles of adult learning
 Experience with membership organizations, volunteer and team management
 Experience in conceptualizing and implementing educational programs, including
workshops, seminars and other adult learning experiences
 Demonstrated leadership, coaching and relationship management experience
 Strong communication and interpersonal skills
 Strong work ethic and high energy level
 Experience and demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a wide
range of stakeholders
 Integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven and self-directed, with demonstrated
attention to detail
 College graduate, advance degree preferred
 5-10 years relevant experience in philanthropy, the nonprofit sector, a membership
association, or related field
Salary and Benefits
Salary commensurate with experience. In addition, Philanthropy Ohio offers a generous
benefits package including medical, dental and vision insurance, 15 days paid vacation in the
