24 September 2014 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE PENINSULA ART RESIDENCY WINTER EXHIBITION Mr Wu Yaming and his landscape paintings Celebrating its first anniversary following the launch in September 2013, The Peninsula Beijing’s “Art Residency” programme continues to showcase some of China’s most innovative and creative contemporary artists by inviting them, one-byone, to become the hotel’s “Artist-in-Residence”; living and working in the hotel in a specially designated Art Suite, together with an exhibition of the artist’s works around The Peninsula’s public spaces. This October 2014, The Peninsula Beijing is proud to feature The Landscape Paintings by Wu Yaming, whose sprightliness and vitality propel this classical Chinese art form right into the present. Wu Yaming, a well-known Chinese contemporary landscape painter, is a true master of “ink on paper”. Wu started painting in 1959 at the Imperial Palace Museum. For the last 45 years he has been dedicated to painting; learning the fundamentals from his predecessors, but without becoming bound by traditional approaches. In his works, there are reflections of Buddhist culture, Zen, and an unconventional freedom that is deeply rooted in his heart. Wu Yaming's landscape paintings are highly regarded both in China and abroad. He has had multiple exhibitions including those at the United Nations, and in Japan and the U.S. His collectors include U.S. former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, former Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and King of Thailand, King Bhumibhol. "When I was 18 I painted like Leonardo, it's taken me 65 years to learn to paint like a child". So said Picasso in his later years in life. Wu Yaming embodies this spirit. As his work matures, it simultaneously rejuvenates. -more- THE PENINSULA ART RESIDENCY WINTER EXHIBITION - 2 A preview of the paintings to be exhibited: The Peninsula Art Residency Programme: Since September 2013, The Peninsula Beijing has been extending its interest in highlevel art and has unveiled a new concept called The Peninsula Art Residency in collaboration with the Museum of Art and Urbanity Shanghai (MAUS). The Peninsula Art Residency gives leading contemporary artists the opportunity to exhibit their work in a unique environment, which in turn enhances the avant-garde architecture and aesthetics of the hotel. Throughout the year, each “Artist-inResidence” has been displaying his or her art in the public areas of the hotel. The Peninsula Beijing has also prepared a special “Art Suite” by converting one of the suites into an art space and allowing guests full access to explore the journey of art with The Peninsula and exchange opinions and insight with the artist on both Chinese and international art. ### THE PENINSULA ART RESIDENCY WINTER EXHIBITION - 3 About the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited (HSH) Incorporated in 1866 and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (00045), The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited is the holding company of a group which is engaged in the ownership, development, and management of prestigious hotels and commercial and residential properties in key locations in Asia, the United States and Europe, as well as the provision of tourism and leisure, club management and other services.
