SOCIAL STUDIES K.C.P.E 2005 www.kcse-online.info 1 6. Three of the following are economic activities practised in Ama area. Which one is not? A. Farming B. Fishing C. Mining D. Trading Candidates were expected to identify the economic activity that was not evident as exisisting in the area covered by the map. It was important to take note that the question was asked in a negative form. Such questions use terms such as NOT or all the following EXCEPT. Normally the negative is bolded to make you take interest in it. It is possible many candidates failed to note that the question was asked in a negative form, thus the poor perfomance. The correct answer was B - Fishing Presence of fishing traps, fishing villages or fish processing factory are signs that show fishing is taking place in an area. These were not shown on the map. Mare presence of a river does not mean that fishing takes place. All the other three economic activities were indicated on the map. Farming by presence of tea farm, mining by presence of murram pit and trading by shops and market, quarry could also be an indication that open mining is taking place unless indicated that it is abandoned. 13. 15. Which one of the following was a result of the settlement of the Bantu in the area around Mt.Kenya during the pre-colonial period? A. Formation of kingdoms in the area B. Displacement of Dorobo from the area C. Introduction of cash crop farming in the area D. Outbreak of diseases in the area Almost half of the candidates chose option C Introduction of cash crop farming in the area, which was wrong. They most likely failed to notice the question asked about Bantus and not Europeans settlement in Mt. Kenya region. There were no kingdoms in this area thus option A was wrong. The Europeans and not the Bantus introduced cash crops in the area and there were no outbreak of diseases as a result of Bantu settlement. This therefore disqualifies choice C and D. One is left with choice B - Displacement of the Dorobo from the area as the correct answer. 23. The main problem that has contributed to the decline in coffee production in Kenya is A. low payment to farmers B. lack of domestic market C. competition from other coffee growing countries D. scarcity of land for growing the crop Which one of the following countries in Africa was colonised by the French? A. Angola B. Chad C. Tanganyika D. Gambia for decline. The correct answer is A - Low payment to farmers. The correct answer can be arrived at through elimination method as follows; Option B - Lack of domestic market iseliminated as a possible correct answer because most of the coffee produced in Kenya is for export. Very little is milled, Packed and sold locally. As for choice C - Competition from other coffee growing countries is eliminated becauseKenya produces Arabica coffee which fetches better price than Robusta coffee. Arabica coffee is grown in few countries and therefore competition is not very high. Lastly option D-Scarcity of land for growing the crop would have perhaps been a correct answer had the question asked reasons lack of increase in coffee production, scarcity of land therefore can not be a reason www.kcse-online.info 2 The correct answer was B - Chad, which was one of the many countries colonised by French. Others were Senegal, Algeria, Sierra Leone and Gold Coast. Angola was colonised by Portugal, Gambia by Italy and Tanganyika by Germans at first and then British after end of World War I. Candidates need to read widely and remember facts that they read. Below is a map of African countries showing how they were colonised. Note that the French colonies were concentrated in Central and North West Africa and the Italian colonies were concentrated in Central and North West Africa and the Italian colonies were mainly Congo, Angola and Madagascar. Take note of the indepedent countries, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone that were not colonised. www.kcse-online.info 3
