Exercise 1 - Simple Formulas

Excel Review - Anna & the King

The spreadsheets for this problem can be found at the end of this section. The workbook is named

“Casting”. In this workbook you (the producer) are going to keep track of the different cast and crew slots that need to be filled for your upcoming production of “The King and I”. You will be compiling costs for a 13 week run of this play ($/run). In your formulas use cell references wherever possible .

So far you have compiled the following spreadsheets:

Cast – this is a list of cast and crew members that will need to be hired. In this spreadsheet you have estimated the number of hours per week that will be required for rehearsal and performances from each person. You will use this sheet to calculate total wages and benefits per run for each associated part/crew member. Wages and benefits are determined based on the category assigned to that part/crew member. The number of weeks this play will run is listed on sheet units .

Category – this is a list by category of the wages per hour. Only certain categories will receive any benefits as indicated in Column C (True – receive benefits, False – do not receive benefits). The range category!A2:D6 has been named info and can be used in your formulas.

 Benefits – lists the associated cost of benefits based on the number of hours per week worked. So if a cast/crew member is benefit eligible, then the amount of benefits paid is determined based on the number of hours per week they will be working. Those working under 20 hours will receive

$100/week, those working 20 hours to under 30 hours will receive $125/week etc. The range benefits!B1:E2 has been named benefit and can be used in your formulas.

 Units – this spreadsheet lists some unit conversions and other data you may need in some of your calculations

 Auditions – this is a list of people who have submitted resumes requesting auditions. You have compiled this list to include each person’s age, height (in inches), and whether they have acting, singing or dancing experience. From this list you will determine which roles they qualify to audition for.

1.

Write an Excel formula in cell cast!D2, which can be copied down the column, to determine the wages in dollars per run which will be paid to the corresponding cast/crew member.

2.

Write an Excel formula in cell cast!E2, which can be copied down the column, to determine the benefits in dollars per run which will be paid to the corresponding cast/crew member. Those who do not receive benefits should have $0 displayed in the corresponding cell.

3.

Write an Excel formula in cell cast!F2, which can be copied down the column, to determine the total compensation received per run (wages and benefits) for the corresponding cast/crew member.

4.

Write an Excel formula in cell cast!D10, which can be copied across the row, to determine the total amount of wages per run of all cast/crew members.

1

5.

Write an Excel formula in cell cast!G2 to calculate the wages of Anna as a percent of total wages paid to all cast/crew. Write the formula so it can be copied down the column to calculate the corresponding cast/crew member’s percent of total wages, and so it can be copied across into column

H to calculate the corresponding cast/crew member’s benefits as a percentage of total benefits paid out.

6.

Write an Excel formula in cell cast!I2 to calculate if (True/False) the total compensation for the corresponding cast member is greater than the average total compensation for all cast/crew members.

Assume you will copy the formula down the column.

7.

Write an Excel formula in cell cast! F12 to determine the total compensation paid to cast/crew members in category 1.

8.

Write an Excel formula in cell auditions!H2, which can be copied down the column, to determine

(True/False) if this person is eligible to try out for the role of Anna. You are only allowing people to try out for Anna if they meet all of the following criteria: Are female, over age 25 and have both acting and singing experience.

9.

Write an Excel formula in cell auditions!I2, which can be copied down the column, to determine

(True/False) if this person is eligible to try out for the minor parts only. Those eligible to try out for minor parts only have only acting experience but no singing or dancing experience.

10.

Write an Excel formula in cell auditions!J2, which can be copied down the column, to determine

(true/false) if this person is eligible to try out for the role of the King. You are only allowing people to try out for the King if they are Male and either over 45 or at least 6 feet tall.

11.

Write an Excel formula in cell auditions! E12 to determine the age of the oldest person who has applied for an audition.

2

12.

You are considering the financial cost of taking the play on the road if the original run is successful.

The cost of a one-week road trip includes wages (no benefits) for the cast/crew at the same rate as before, plus the cost of transportation and hotel/food (these costs can be found in worksheet units!).

Assume you are only taking the cast/crew members who appear on the list in worksheet cast! Write an Excel formula in cell cast!F13 to determine the total cost of a one week road trip. Make sure the formula will work even if you later change your mind and decide to not hire someone or add an additional cast/crew member.

13.

If you estimated the cost of the road trip is $20,000 or less you will definitely go , if the cost is over

$20,000 but under $30,000 you will decide later . If the cost of the road trip is $30,000 or more you will definitely not go . Write an Excel formula in cell cast!F14 to automatically determine your decision regarding the roadtrip.

14.

You have decided to finance this play using a bank loan. Your actual total costs to rent the theater, buy costumes, and pay wages is about $450,000. The bank is willing to loan you 90% of the total cost at 10% interest compounded monthly. Write an Excel formula in cell cast!F15 to determine the monthly payments on this loan with a one year payback.

15.

Another alternative financing plan is to obtain money now from financial backers and put it in a bank until you need it. Write an Excel formula in cell cast!F16 do determine the following (true/false): If you put $350,000 in a savings account now, you will have enough money eighteen months from now to payout the $450,000 you will need to produce the play. The current interest rate is 6% compounded quarterly.
