Math 8 Periods 5 & 6 January 18 - 22, 2016 Objectives: The students will Improve fluency and accuracy of basic calculations Compare and order integers Use order of operations rules to simplify expressions Identify expressions and identify properties Locate numbers on a number line. Name the opposite of an integer Find the absolute value of integers Add integers Module 4: Linear Equations Expressions and Equations (EE) Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations. Enduring Understandings • Linear functions have a constant rate of change, defined as its slope. • Proportional relationships are linear. • A function has exactly one output for every input. • A linear function can be recognized from its form, y = mx + b. Essential Questions: • What is the difference between a linear and non-linear function? • What are the properties of a linear function? • What is an example of a non-linear function? Focus Standards: 8.EE.C.7. Solve linear equations in one variable. o o Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form x = a, a = a, or a = b results (where a and b are different numbers). b. Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms. Mathematical Practices 8.MP.1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 8.MP.2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 8.MP.3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 8.MP.4. Model with mathematics. 8.MP.7. Look for and make use of structure. Class Work Monday January 18 Tuesday January 19 1.
