OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT PROGRAM
Course Number & Title: OTA 2023 Emergence of OT Science
Credit Hours: 3 Semester Credit Hours (3 hrs/week x 15 weeks=45 clock hrs)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class will review the history of occupational therapy
by covering the major theories of the field from its onset until present time with the
current focus on occupational science.
STUDENT LEARNER OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, the student
learner will have been given the opportunity to:
1. List the major theories of occupational science from the onset of the profession until
the present time with increasing focus on occupational science.
2. Describe how a theory relates to daily practice.
3. Correlate theory to assessment strategies and instruments used in the field.
4. Differentiate occupational science and occupational therapy.
5. Describe how occupational science informs occupational therapy practice.
6. Examine occupational therapy treatment methods and the therapeutic components of
the proposed media.
7. Using a historical perspective, analyze therapeutic use of occupations with clients of
differing cultures and societies and effects of environment and community.
8. Describe the influence of social conditions and the ethical context in which humans
participate in occupations (occupational justice) and international dimensions of practice.
9. Summarize the history of occupational therapy contrasted to the history of medicine,
physical therapy, dentistry and one other profession selected by the student.
10. Relate the history of the profession as presented in the Eleanor Clarke Slagle lectures.
11. Describe how scope of practice has changed through the years.
12. Describe the importance of occupation and meaningful activity.
TEACHING STRATEGIES:
Guided discussion, videotaped presentations, assigned and self-selected readings, oral and written
assignments, class presentations.

10% Short Paper: Develop a matrix of 5 theories selected by the student including time reference,
author(s), and major influence for practice

including the role of the OTA
10% Short Paper: Understand the influence of social conditions and the ethical context in which humans
participate in occupations (occupational justice)

1. The College of Nursing and Health Professions values academic integrity. An Honor

academic dishonesty, plagiarism, or cheating, that individual will be held accountable.
2. Assignments should be submitted by the due date. Late Assignments will not be accepted
unless an exception is negotiated with the Instructor prior to the assignment due date.
3. Classes are mandatory and must be attended. Participation is required and evaluated.
4. ALL official communication, notices or announcements will be sent through the
student’s ASU EMAIL account ONLY. The student is accountable for checking this
account on a regular basis (daily or every other day) and is accountable for all official
communication. It is the student’s responsibility to keep the email account viable,
enabled to receive email transmissions and blackboard access on a daily basis.
