ARKANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NURSING AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT PROGRAM Course Number & Title: OTA 2081 Fieldwork Education IB Credit Hours: 1 Semester Credit Hours (40 hour week of observation) PLACEMENT: Fall FACULTY: TBA COURSE DESCRIPTION: Provides the student with practice experience necessary to identify commonly seen disabilities, evaluation techniques and methods of treatment for a clinical population. This can be in collaboration with Occupational Therapists and other professionals. Students will demonstrate universal precautions, hand washing techniques, and safety protocols. STUDENT LEARNER OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, the student learner will have been given the opportunity to: 1. Identify clients symptoms and behaviors in a fieldwork environment. 2. Recognize occupational therapy interventions in therapeutic environments. 3. Identify screening and assessment techniques used to identify the need for occupational therapy services. 4. Explore age appropriate treatment media, meaningful activities, and selected life tasks available to the occupational therapist and the OTA for treatment. 5. Explain the meaning and dynamics of occupation and meaningful activities including the interaction of performance area, performance components, and performance contexts. 6. Practice professional behaviors and demonstrate universal precautions. 7. Examine therapeutic intervention through the treatment intervention plan assignments that includes gradation and progression with tasks/activities. 8. Demonstrate professional oral and written communication skills. 9. Document, through the journal assignment and treatment intervention plan, different cultural considerations. 10. Document, through the journal assignment and treatment intervention plans, environment and community effects on observed patients and discharge plans. 11. Exhibit ethical behaviors as established by the Occupational Therapy Assistant Programs Code of Student Ethics and Occupational Therapy Ethics described by the American Occupational Therapy Association. 12. Identify the types of professional personnel encountered during the experience, describing their roles as team members, and opportunities for collaboration. 13. Establish effective interpersonal relationships with staff and patients. 14. Explain the effects of health disability, disease process, and traumatic injury to the 1 individual within the context of family and society. 15. Select, adapt and sequence relevant occupations and meaningful activities that support the intervention goals. TEACHING STRATEGIES: Fieldwork for 40 clock hours in one agency.
