WORKSHEET 1 - CLIMATE REGIONS OF THE WORLD Pages 90-94
1. Explain the difference between weather and climate.
The difference is based in time. Weather happens over a short period while
climate occur over long periods. E.g. Climate = Pretoria should have high heat
levels and rain in the summer. Weather = There will be days in summer that is
cold (18°C) with a strong wind and 30mm of rain.
2. Name the four elements of weather.
Rain. Wind. Temperature. Humidity.
3. Draw Table 3 (complete) in your script.
4. Explain the difference between rain, sleet, snow and hail.
Water vapor condenses in the atmosphere to form water droplets that fall to
earth as rain.
If it is cold enough, the water drops freezes and forms sleet / ice rain.
If the raindrop is caught in an updraft, it freezes and form hail. Depending on
the strength of the updraft this proses can be repeated with each repetition the
hail ball gets bigger.
When water vapor in the atmosphere directly converts to ice, snowflakes form.
5. Name the 10 climatic regions of the world.

5.2. Subtropical climate
5.3. Temperate climate
5.4. Desert climate
5.5. Semi-arid climate
5.6. Continental climate
5.7. Polar climate
5.8. Mediterranean climate
5.9. Tundra climate

winter temperatures (0-5 ˚ C)
High rainfall at the end of winter / beginning of summer
Very dry summer and late summer.
f. In what climate region is Sockhold located?
