Scotland Scotland has been a part of Great Britain since 1707. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, it has 440 000 people. But the biggest city in Scotland is Glasgow, it has 685000 inhabitants. The whole of Scotland has 5 million inhabitants. One of Great Britain´s highest mountains is in Scotland. It is called Ben Nevis, it´s 1344 m. The biggest and the deepest lakes are also in Scotland. The biggest lake is called Loch Lomond. It´s 70 square metres big. The name of the deepest lake is Loch Ness. It´s 229 metres deep. Loch Ness is a really famous place, because of the well-known sea-monster Nessie that lives there. There are many stories about Nessie. Some people think that she is a Plesiosauri. A Plesiosauri is an old water gecko, from the dinosaur´s time. The Plesiosauri has been extinct for 65 million years. A Plesiosauri doesn´t have the bone structure to hold up the head over the water. Many people have seen Nessie do that. Another thought is that she is a giant eel that lives on the bottom of the lake. 1993 Bertram Millis Circus said that the one that catches Nessie will get £ 20. 000. Something else that is special with Scotland is kilts and bagpipes. A kilt is an man-skirt that many Irish men wear. It´s made of wool and has often a checked patten on it. A bagpipe is a wind-instrument. It looks like a flute and a bag of leather. If you want to go on sunny vacation, you shouldn´t go to Scotland because it´s a country with lots of rain and not that much sun. But it´s a bit warmer on the east side of Scotland. If you like castles you should go to Scotland. There are many beautiful castles there. There is nothing special with the Scottish kitchen but one of Scotland´s most famous dishes are Haggis, it´s made of liver, offal, oatmeal, onions and spices.
