LUMINARIA 2010 LET OUR HOPE, LAUNCH US TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE One important aspect of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the opportunity for people to come together to remember loved ones lost to cancer, support those who are still fighting, and honor those who have won their battle. One of the most moving parts of the event is the Luminaria Ceremony. As the sun sets over campsites and darkness falls, the night is brightened by the glow of illuminated bags called luminaria, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer. Some celebrate cancer survivors, while others help us honor and remember those gone too soon. All represent someone special who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in their honor. KEY POINTS about Luminaria at Relay For Life: ALWAYS USE THE BAGS PROVIDED, they are a standard size and folded to optimize stability and display. You can make your own Luminaria or we can do it for you. Simple or elaborate, they all add impact Each team member is encouraged to do a Luminaria for his or her reason to Relay. Please keep Luminaria log sheets and monies separate from other donations. LUMINARIA ENVELOPE provided. FORMS Two forms are available for your use: 1. Luminaria Log Sheets (Primary): Please give one to each team member – they may be copied as needed, additional copies will be available at all meetings. It is important to fill these out carefully and completely, the information on these forms is used to put together the lists of individual names read at the Luminaria ceremony. Turn Log Sheets in before the event, or EARLY on Friday as you arrive at the track. We log all names in a spreadsheet and this does take time. PLEASE – note the distinction between Memorial Bags for someone who has been lost to cancer and Honoring a Survivor Bag to cheer on a survivor. There is a column to note M or H on the log sheet – this is the basis for which list the names are assigned to. Please include your TEAM NAME on the bottom of the log sheet. Whether it is one Luminaria or a full page of 15 – every Luminaria is important. 2. Luminaria & requests may be submitted by mail: Cindy Thomas, 5190 Division Rd, West Bend, WI 53095 Luminaria bags are made by volunteers as you request. FAMILY DAY TO DESIGN BAGS: Gather family together for an hour or so to create bags for those in your own family touched by cancer. Family holiday gatherings like Easter and Memorial Day take on special added meaning by remembering and honoring these special individuals. DECORATE BAGS FOR YOUR TEAM: Team captains or the team as a group can create a basic decoration on bags to make them easy to find on the track. Things to consider could be a simple bright graphic in the corner of each bag – a standard way to place the names – one color, or type of print. Some individuals are happy to purchase a bag that is already decorated, all they need to do is add their loved ones name. We have a supply of bags ready - blank and decorated. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS CONTACT: Cindy Thomas (262) 644-8630 2010 Hartford/Slinger Relay For Life. * Copy this sheet as needed. * Lum inar ia Lo g She e t Luminaria bags line the track and are lit as night falls to highlight the Luminaria Ceremony.
