Section 2.1: The Identity and Zero Properties (Pink Foldable)



Identity Property of Addition: Adding zero does not change the value of a number.
Identity Property of Multiplication: Multiplying by one does not change the value of a
number.
Zero Property of Multiplication: Multiplying by zero results in a product of zero.
Example: Identify the property of operations you could use to write an expression equivalent to
(5 ∙ 0) + 4. Then use that property to evaluate the expression.
a. Zero Property of Multiplication
b. Identity Property of Multiplication
c. Associative Property of Multiplication
(5 ∙ 0) + 4 = ___________________
Section 2.2 and 2.3: The Commutative and Associative Properties (Pink Foldable)




Commutative Property of Addition: Changing the order of the numbers does not
change the sum.
Commutative Property of Multiplication: Changing the order of the factors does not
change the product.
Associative Property of Addition: Changing the grouping of numbers does not change
the sum.
Associative Property of Multiplication: Changing the grouping of factors does not
change the product.
Example: In the first 3 hours it is open, the theater sells 20 tickets. The theater expects to sell x
more tickets before the end of the day. Write two expressions that model the number of
tickets sold that day.

x ∙ 20
20 + x
3+x
x + 20
20 ∙ x
Example: Each week Tom spends 3 hours playing soccer, 2 hours reading and 5 hours doing
homework. Use the Associate Property of Addition to write two equivalent expressions that
show the total number of hours Tom spends playing soccer, reading and doing homework.
A.
B.
C.
D.
(3 + 2) + 5 = 3 + 2 + 5
(3 + 2) + 5 = 2 + (3 + 5)
(3 + 2) + 5 = 3 + (5 + 2)
(3 + 2) + 5 = 3 + (2 + 5)
Section 2.5: The Distributive Property (Pink Foldable/Distributive Property Notes Sheet)

Distributive Property: multiply the term on the outside of the parenthesis with the
terms inside the parenthesis…. then either add or subtract them
3 ( x + 4 ) = 3 ( x + 4 ) = 3x + 3∙4 = 3x + 12
Example: Use the Distributive Property to write an expression equivalent to 3(5 + 2).
A.
B.
C.
D.
3(5) + 2
3(7)
(3 + 5)(3 + 2)
3(5) + 3(2)
Example: Use the Distributive Property to write an equivalent expression.
A. 2(x + 4)
B.) 3(x – 5)
C.) x(3 + 6)
D.) 4(2x + 6)

Section 3.3 and 3.4: Solving Equations (Use Format Sheet; Inverse Operations Notes;
Strategies Examples Notes)
Example: Solve the following equations.
A. x + 14 = 33
B.) x – 24 = 7
C.) x ÷ 8 = 3
D.) 3x = 21
Example: Write the equation from the situation given. Then solve it and explain how you went
about solving your problem. Finally, prove your solution using substitution. Think about the
strategies you could use to explain your solution. Choose either the ax = b or x + a = b format.
a. Tammy went to the grocery store and purchased 7 bags of candy that each cost the same
amount of money. Her total cost for the candy was $77. Write an equation to represent the
situation above.
Remember to Define your Variable.

b. James had his birthday over the weekend and his grandmother gave him some money. He
already has $30 saved up in his piggy bank. Now he has $125. Write an equation to represent
the situation above.
