Roles in Medieval Society
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! You will be travelling back in time to the Middle Ages!
Choose a role (craftsperson, serf, knight, lady, etc.) that you would like to find
out more about. You will research their role in society. Find out what they ate,
how they dressed, what type of house they lived in, etc… You will then make a
video of yourself (in character) and present it to the townspeople (a.k.a. our
class). Bring it in on a device, USB stick, or email it to me.

You will be evaluated in these subjects:
 Social Studies - knowledge about the life and times in the Middle Ages
 Language – reading for information, research writing, script writing
 Drama - acting in character, speaking in role (expression, tone of voice)
Part 1: Research - Use these questions to guide your research.





What did they do? How did they learn their job?
Was their job important? Who did it help?
What was everyday life like? Home? Food? Clothing?
What was their family life like? Did they take care of their own children?
Was life easy or difficult? Was this person important in society?
Part 2: Script
You will use your research notes to write a short script for your presentation
 You may write your script in either - 1st person narrative (e.g. “I am a serf
and my life is very hard...”) - or – 3rd person descriptive e.g. (“The serfs
had a difficult life...”)
 Try to use the vocabulary of the Medieval Times and avoid words like "stuff"
and "things”
Part 3: Presentation - Length – about 2 minutes
Use this guideline to help you prepare for your presentation…
You will need the following…
 Costume (see the section about costumes below)
 Artifacts (pretend) related to your specific person
 Cue cards (provided)
Costume
 Your costume should NOT be purchased – instead, make imaginative use of
clothing and materials available in your home (robes, towels, old Halloween
costumes, cardboard for a shield/sword, etc…)
 You will wear the costume during your presentation
Artifacts
 Use pretend items that would have been used by the person you are
portraying and explain why and how they would have used it (Ex. Wooden
spoon for a cook, keys for a black smith, etc.)
Cue Cards
 You will write a script outline on your cue cards
 Your script outline will remind you of the topics you are going to talk about
and the order
 Do not to read from your cue cards – use them as a guide for your
presentation (Tip: You should sound like you are talking, not reading…)
