0 I am Field Marshall Douglas Haig - Commander of the British Army. I understand that you are the Captain of the Ceylon Special Forces. Tomorrow morning, we are going launch our grand offensive at the Somme. Our artillery has bombarded the German trenches for seven days and nights. Their barbed wire should be destroyed and their men all dead! Your job is to lead the Ceylon soldiers across 'no-mans land' to occupy the German trenches. It should be easy job. Good luck! When the time comes to 'go over the top', do you: a) Tell your men to take all their equipment and walk across 'no-mans land'? b) Get your soldiers to take only their weapons and crawl, using the shell holes for cover, as there may still be German machine gunners ready for you?? c) Something else?! ________________________________________________________________________ Captain, we need help! That idiot Haig couldn't have been more wrong - the German machine gunners are alive and well and have massacred 500 of my regiment in less than ten minutes. Plus, the barbed wire protecting the German trenches is still intact. Now the remaining twenty men of our regiment are stuck in this shell hole in the middle of 'no mans land'. What the hell do we do, Sir?! Do you: a) Order your men to bayonet charge forward at the machine gunners? b) Tell your men to stay in the shell hole until the cover of night, then crawl back to the British trenches? c) A different idea of your own? ________________________________________________________________________ Stop! Don't shoot! I am German and I surrender! I hate the English and the Kaiser but I like Ceylon! I can tell you the way through the German support trenches so you can capture many German soldiers and be the hero of Ceylon! Just go down that support trench ... it's not a dead end or an ambush ... I promise ... I like your country ... Do you: a) Trust the German and go down the support trench. He must be telling the truth! b) Take the German prisoner of war and ignore him - it's bound to be a trap! c) A different idea of your own? __________________________________________________________ Sir! My name is Pierre Henry of the Royal Canadian Regiment! We have been asked to 'go over the top' with the Ceylon Special Forces tomorrow at the Somme. Some of my men say we should take gas masks with us, the others say we should charge on horseback like a cavalry division. What do you think, Sir? Do you: a) Advise Pierre to take gas masks. b) Advise Pierre to charge over 'no mans land' on horse back. c) A different idea of your own?
