The Environmental Protections Agency’s (EPA) National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL), Office of Research
and Development (ORD) is seeking a scientific leader for the position of Senior Atmospheric Scientist. This is a full-time position,
reporting to the Deputy Director, NERL, and possible duty locations could be any of the existing NERL locations (Research Triangle Park,
NC; Athens, Georgia; Cincinnati, Ohio; Las Vegas, Nevada, or EPA, Region 1 or Region 8). NERL is a scientific organization responsible for
carrying out EPA’s mission to protect human health and the environment by developing and applying innovations in exposure science.
NERL provides scientific leadership, understanding, and the tools necessary to quantify exposure for humans and ecosystems. This
involves describing the characteristics of the environment, the movement of stressors and human/ecological receptors in the
environment, and the exposure that results from contact between stressors and human/ecological receptors. NERL scientists inform
sustainable solutions to complex environmental problems by producing exposure methods, models, and data used by the Agency for
problem formulation and scoping, to analyze risks and potential solutions, and to evaluate progress toward intended outcomes. A key
component of NERL’s research program is the development of exposure assessment methods designed to enhance and support
decisions made by EPA stakeholders relating to environment exposures to a variety of chemical and nonchemical stressors.
Who We Are Looking For?
We are looking for a scientific leader who is recognized for his/her scientific leadership in the area of atmospheric sciences, with
particular experience investigating how atmospheric processes relate to ecological and human exposure to air pollution. As a Senior
Scientist, he/she will provide scientific leadership and critical capabilities in the area of atmospheric sciences and modeling research.
He/she should be nationally and internationally recognized as an authority and leader on complex problems of concern to EPA as
evidenced by publications in recognized peer review journals, authorship of books and monographs, invited lectures, and development
of symposia and colloquia.
Major Responsibilities of the Senior Atmospheric Scientist include:

Establish and lead a broad based multidisciplinary research program to address critical needs related to advancing atmospheric
models that can simulate the transport and fate of pollutants in the atmosphere and applying those models for assessing
exposures as they relate to critical Agency problems, including improving air quality and preparing for a changing climate.

Conduct studies on the development, evaluation, and validation of analytical meteorological and air quality models to predict the
temporal and spatial distribution of air pollutants and publish results in scientific journals.

Provide leadership of ORD’s atmospheric modeling exposure research program by working with appropriate management and
staff to help ensure that the program is on the leading scientific edge of such research.

Serve as a senior spokesperson/representative for ORD in the area of atmospheric modeling research.
