PURPOSE OF JOB
Reporting to the Director: Projects and Capital Works, the Project Engineer is responsible for the design and
execution of mechanical and electrical works on Campus. The incumbent will be responsible for the following.
 Serve as a team member of project teams responsible for the co-ordination of building and renovation
functions necessary to address the on-going space requirements of the University,
 Manage and co-ordinate capital building, engineering related or other development projects,
 Undertake all infrastructure renewal or maintenance refurbishment projects as negotiated with the Director:
Projects & Capital Works and the Director: Maintenance and Operations, and
 Undertake all enabling infrastructure works as negotiated with the Director: Projects & Capital Works and the
Director: Physical Planning.

Carry out with limited direction the
normal engineering design work
associated with the Projects and Capital
Works section.
Design mechanical and electrical
installations for minor to medium-sized
projects.
Provide technical inputs regarding
mechanical, electrical, electronic, lifts
and other plant installations to projects
at all stages from inception to
completion.
Determine scope of projects required
which pertain to physical plant.
Contribute to the development of briefs
for external consultants / contractors in
respect of mechanical, electrical and
other plant or installations.
Undertake feasibility studies in respect of
mechanical and electrical installations or
other plant.
Develop engineering standards and
specifications as well as the continual
development of such as and when
technology improves, ensuring efficiency
of plant.
Oversee designs of professional
consultants.
Approve design proposals prior to
implementation.

Draw up specifications, bills of quantities,
cost estimates and tender
documentation.
Facilitate drawings and plans to
accompany tender documentation.
Check and approve installations on
completion and ensure commissioning
and hand-over to the Maintenance and
Operations section of mechanical,
electrical and other plant and
installations in accordance with standard
procedures.
Conform at all times to agreed budget
and time targets as may be project
specific, set by project teams or indicated
by the Director: Projects and Capital
Works.
Review and facilitate handover of “asbuilt” documentation and “O&M”
Manuals to Operations and Maintenance
section.

Ensure allocation of workload among
design technicians, professional
consultants and drafts person/s.
Provides conceptual design input and
guidance to design technicians.
Compile budget and provide advice to
project teams and Directors.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications
A relevant Bachelor’s degree or National Higher Diploma (T4) in the Mechanical or
Electrical Engineering Field (NQF Level 6/7) with appropriate experience
AND
Registration as a professional with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
OR
Eligibility to obtain registration with ECSA within 2 (two) years of appointment.
Minimum Experience
A total of 7 (seven) years appropriate experience, after graduation, of which at
least 5 (five) was at operational level and 2 (two) years was at a supervisory or
management level.


Additional Attributes
Required

Code EB Driver’s License
Medically fit experiencing no difficulty with walking, hearing, eyesight,
climbing steps or entering confined spaces with no fear of heights.
If qualified in the mechanical engineering field then a working knowledge of
the electrical engineering, or vice versa as well as an understanding how
building services integrate.
