ESS Supplement of External Graduate Student Fellowships (e.g., NASA NESSF Awards, NSF Graduate Fellowships) ESS Department policy is to provide a supplement to external graduate student fellowship awards (e.g., NASA NESSF Awards, NSF Graduate Fellowships) when the fellowship program restricts the amount of funds that can be used for salary, benefits, or operating fees to less than the actual UW levels. Note that students should request tuition waivers from the Graduate School if the fellowship program will not cover full tuition, but if the Graduate School does not award waivers ESS will provide the waivers. For example, if the salary allowed is a total of $24,000 over 12 months ($2000/month), but the stipend/salary level at UW is for a total of $24,240 ($2020/month), ESS will provide the additional $20/month as well as any corresponding benefits. Likewise, if tuition is limited to less than the total tuition actual cost (2 credits for summer), ESS will provide a supplement for the tuition. The supplemental funds will be from budget 75-0440. This policy is contingent on the supplemental income being allowed by the fellowship program. If the fellowship program does not permit the student to receive compensation or stipend above the total allowed by the fellowship then ESS cannot provide the additional funding.
