Community Pediatrics
Orientation
Welcome to the Community Pediatrics Rotation. This rotation is designed for residents to learn how physicians
can become involved with improving children’s health and access to services at the community level. The
rotation is different from your other clinical rotation in that it includes a variety of experiences at both clinical
and non-clinical sites.
It is our hope that every experience contributes to your skills in community pediatrics. Your site visits will expose
you to multiple community resources, special patient populations, child health risk factors, health indicators,
and help you understand and explore the role of a pediatrician in advocating for child health.
Please routinely check your program email account. It will be used to communicate any changes to your
schedule and for communication with faculty.
Expectations: The expectations for this rotation are slightly different from your clinical rotations. Please review
carefully so it is a smooth experience.

Changes to Schedule: All changes to the pre-scheduled activities must first be discussed with the rotation
faculty. Some activities are difficult to schedule and are not open for rescheduling. Residents should not
contact the site directly without first talking to the faculty. We hope this will avoid some problems our
community partners have experienced in the past.
Any changes/requests that you would normally discuss with a Chief Resident must also be reviewed with
rotation faculty, even if approved by a Chief Resident. Our intention is not to revise any decisions, but to
ensure that community partners and faculty are properly informed to keep this rotation a smooth
experience.

Professional Courtesy: If you expect that you will be more than five minutes late to any site visit, call and
inform them of what time you will arrive.
Most sites have been scheduled within two weeks of your start date, so there is almost never a problem
with people expecting you on the day you are scheduled. To be on the safe side, you may call the day
before. It is also a good time to get directions that might be clearer than what we have provided. If you feel
that someone at the site is unaware you were coming or is not respectful, please inform the faculty on the
same day. We value your time and want every experience to be a good one.
o
In-Patient Call: If you have in-patient call and must be back at the hospital at 5 PM, please let your
site visit know on arrival so that you can leave on-time.

Observe common courtesy: dress professionally (no scrubs), wear your name tag, introduce yourself, be
punctual, and thank your preceptor. Most of them are donating their time! Remember you are representing
yourself and our program.

Conference Attendance: Conference attendance is required, with a few exceptions during the month. These
are the only activities that should affect noon conference attendance: Child Fatality Review Team, PCH
Forensics team meeting, Crisis Nursery Presentations and Hospice of the Valley home visits. If there are
any other exceptions you will be notified at orientation.
If noon conference is running long and you have a site visit scheduled, leave the conference at the time it is
scheduled to end so you are on-time for your site visit.

Site Visits
Site visits contribute to competencies in Community Pediatrics by introducing you to programs, agencies, or
people who are involved in different aspects of children’s health services or advocacy.
For each site visit, please jot down a few thoughts about your experience on the site visit comment sheet. If you
saw patients, write a little about the patients you saw. These will help us improve the rotation and keep track of
which sites you complete.
