An Unlucky Downpour By Zoe Lewis On October 2nd, 2012 Mr. Savelson’s class went to the Mohonk Preserve. They piled on the bus in their groups and headed to the Mohonk Preserve. When the class got off the bus the guide, Kate, talked to Mr. Savelson’s class about the different layers of the rocks they would be climbing on and what their schedule for the day would be. They started off on their hike in their groups and climbed the Milbrook Trail. Halfway to the top they stopped and Kate talked more about the different layers of rocks. They learned that the top layer of the rock they were standing on was called the quartz conglomerate and the second layer the shale. They continued on their hike and soon reached the top of the ridge. Again they stopped and Kate told them some stories about the other times she climbed the Milbrook Trail. One of Kate’s stories was about when she was climbing the trail and she saw a fake owl. She asked someone why there was a fake owl and they said the owl was there because hawks hate owls. The hawks come close to the owls and try to get them off the branch. Then people can study and identify the hawks a little closer. When she finished talking they continued walking then stopped for lunch about ten minutes later. Lunch was fun, (and crazy) but they soon finished lunch and had to keep walking. In thirty minutes they had finally accomplished their hike! They got back on the bus and drove back to school. The class had a lot of fun on the Milbrook Trail, besides all the rain. When they got back to school they were wet, but proud of themselves for climbing the Milbrook Trail.
