The Calgary Board of Education: needed the space for students: made some upgrades at their
expense, until the completion of the Glengarry School
What kind of organ was the first one St. Martin’s purchased in the 1920s? How did it work?
A Pump Organ: someone had to sit behind it and pump it when the organist wished to play it.
Many of the young boys and some girls in those days had a became familiar with being the
organ pumper as needed during the service.
The 1940s – 1960’s: Growth Years
When putting up a new building (hall or church) in the past, what was the slogan?
“First the hall, then the church”
How did the majority of people get to church before the1950s? What form of public
transportation was used in Calgary back then?
Either on foot or by horse and buggy. The street car was the only form of public transit and it
stop near the church until the 1950s.
Where was the 1st Church building re-located to after being sold, until it was torn down in the
1980s?
It was located at the corner of 69th St. and 17th Ave.
What was the seating capacity of the 2nd church (transformed from the hall) in the 1940s?
The seating capacity was 120 – pews were all built by hand

Used clothing and household items – that were clean and in good condition. It was located in
the church basement. They used the money to foster children overseas.

St. Martin’s 1912. Ron Cross (one of the earliest founding members) was commissioned to
make it in the 1940’s
