IF THERE'S AN EMERGENCY OR DISASTER, HOW SHOULD I HELP? Why reinvent the wheel? This information has been adapted from www.givenow.com.au Global Care is often approached by members of the public asking when and where we will be sending disaster relief to crisis zones. There is no “one-size-fits-all” response, and the Global Care Crisis Plan is a step-by-step assessment and response tool used by the National Director and National Coordinator. Global Care takes many factors into consideration when assessing a natural disaster such as: The magnitude of the disaster in terms of loss of life or property – we decide whether to get involved at a local, state or national level. The volunteers and resources available at or near that location through Local Global Care Operations and International Network of Churches congregations. Whether Global Care can assist as an evacuation centre, distribution centre for food, as a mud army or as a second stage long-term recovery team. How you can help… Australians are always very generous in times of crisis and emergency. When a flood or fire has swept through a community, it brings out the very best in people, but it also presents challenges. Global Care asks for the following support during times of disaster: 1. Your prayers – for victims, assessment staff and volunteers 2. For money or supermarket gift cards as the preferred donation. While we appreciate you might like to send clothing, linen or your spare mattress, these things can actually hinder disaster relief as storage becomes as issue and choice and empowerment is taken away from victims. Global Care supports the spending of funds locally to support businesses that will face loss of trade. Of course, there are times when Global Care might put the call out for specific donations based on assessed needs and we ask you to donate accordingly. For example, for tools, hygiene packs etc. 4. We understand not all supporters have funds to give and can help in other ways such as becoming a local Global Care volunteer. Sign up as a “Disaster Relief Mate” at www.globalcare.com.au to be on standby. It is important to remember that disaster relief is both short and long term. Long after the TV cameras have left, Global Care is there in the secondary recovery stage at disaster zones, meeting needs as required and able.. HOW DO I BECOME A DONOR MATE OF GLOBAL CARE? It’s the heart of Global Care that when disaster comes to a community, we are ready to respond quickly and work with the Local Global Care operation to help our mates in need. And although we are often an early responder, our real work begins when the crisis is over, and the long-term disaster relief begins. Donations are tax-deductible, and a tax receipt can be provided on request.
