Melton Library and Information Service Issue #22 February/March 2013 Melton Library and Learning Hub Update! Opening hours... Caroline Springs Library Monday: 8 am-8.30 pm Tuesday: 8 am-5.30 pm Wednesday: 8 am-8.30 pm Thursday: 8 am-5.30 pm Friday: 8 am-5.30 pm Saturday: 10 am-1.00 pm Sunday: 1 pm-4.00 pm Building works on the new Melton Library and Learning Hub are progressing well and on target. The majority of the external structure has been completed and significant progress has been made on the preparation of the internal areas. The hub is expected to provide an extra five FTE jobs when completed, with the training and business incubator elements of the facility having a role in up-skilling community members and providing opportunities for economic diversification. Of course, no new public space would be complete without an eye-catching piece of art to capture the imagination and stimulate the mind. The Melton Public Art committee recently announced that artist Warren Langley’s lighting installation, Growth, will grace the interior. Growth is sculpturally dramatic by both day and night, a most fitting artwork in an extraordinary architectural setting. Beverley Eikli, author of award winning historical romance novels, will be speaking at both libraries in February. Dressed in a full Georgian court gown with authentic stays, chemise and hip improvers Beverley’s talk will centre on the history of society though costume. It focuses on the political and social reasons behind the changing silhouette between 1750 and 1810 - the era in which her last three books are set. As well as wearing the gown dating from 1780, Beverley will also be bringing with her a mannequin dressed in an authentic Regency gown. Beverley Eikli will be speaking at Melton Library on Thursday February 21 @ 7pm and Caroline Springs Library on Wednesday February 27 @ 11am. Hanifa Deen is an award-winning Australian author of narrative non-fiction. Deen has an instinct for sensing when there is more to a story than first meets the eye. She is very practised at persuading people to reveal secrets and open up to the stranger passing through their lives. Most of her books have taken three or four year (sometimes even longer) to research and write. So far she has written seven books. She describes her books as ‘multilayered: part human rights, part travel—with a liberal dash of memoir’. As well as book writing Hanifa appears regularly at conferences, writers’ festivals, and the Wheeler Centre; she has written for The Age and online magazines Eureka Street and New Matilda. She is also the Editor of a new online magazine Sultana’s Dream. www.melton.vic.gov.au/library Kid’s news Regular Stuff Summer Reading Club 2012/13 Babytime!
