Daily Work 9 – Understanding Randomness
Get into groups as instructed.
Name and section # for each group member (Print)
1. If you roll a die
2. In-class demonstration
a. Dustin will turn his back to the class.
b. Your TAs will give approximately half the groups in the room a die. If you are a group
with a die you are to roll it 100 times and record the sequence of odds and evens in the
table given to you.
c. If you are a group without a die, then you are to make up what you think would be a
convincing random sequence of odd and even outcomes. Enter this sequence in the
table given to you.
d. Return dice and tables to front of the room (to TAs). DO NOT identify on the table
paper anywhere if your group actually rolled the die or made up the sequence.
Was Kobe Streaking?
Kobe Bryant’s field-goal shots for the 1st game of the western conference finals
between Los Angeles and San Antonio (May 19, 2001) are shown below.
(O Missed shot, X = Hit shot)
O O O X X X X X X X O O X O O O (halftime) X X O X O O X X O X X O O O X O X O X X O
Announcer’s first-half comments:
“What an awful start” (after he missed
three in a row)
“The basket is looking mighty big right
now” (after he hit 5 in a row)
“This is an unstoppable run!” (after he hit
the 7th in a row, and coincidentally right
before the run did, in fact, stop).
