COOK / TREATMENT ASSOCIATE SUMMARY Be an appropriate role model for youth in care. Create and maintain an atmosphere which is beneficial to the physical, social, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of youth. Be responsible for guiding and directing youth through the program. Prepare youth for successful living within societal norms toward reunification with their family, a foster family or independent living. The Residential Cook is responsible for providing nutritional, balanced meals for the residential program. The cook accomplishes this work through implementation of the USDA guidelines and regulations. In cooperation with residents and staff, the cook will maintain an atmosphere of support and dietary excellence to benefit the special needs of youth served. EDUCATION A. Possess at least a high school diploma or GED (college training preferred). QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Be open to continue learning through attendance in course study and in-service training and workshops. B. Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationship skills both with youth and adults. Be able to make sound decisions consistent with agency policies and best practice principles for residential treatment. C. Effectively implement the treatment program including Medicaid services such as behavior support, crisis support, case management, and daily living skills and support. D. Have the ability to meet the spiritual needs of the resident in accordance with agency policy. E. Obtain and maintain a valid food handler's card. F. Be in good health, have physical and emotional stamina necessary to implement physical interventions with assaultive or self-injurious residents. G. Attend all required trainings. H. Competent in the preparation of various kinds of foods, including baked goods, meats, fowl, fish, vegetables and salads. I. Must be imaginative and creative in the culinary art. J. Maintain a high degree of personal hygiene and kitchen cleanliness. K. Be an acceptable role model for youth in values and lifestyles in keeping with those ascribed by Burlington. L. Must have a valid state issued driver’s license and submit to an intensive background investigation. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES TREATMENT ASSOCIATE / COOK BUMFS, Inc. 1 The duties and responsibilities of the Treatment Associate/Cook of Burlington United Methodist Family Services shall encompass at least the following: A. Can support the mission and vision of Burlington United Methodist Family Services as evidenced by compliance with all organizational policies and procedures. B. Supports and facilitates positive interaction with others as evidenced by: professional maturity, respect for others, a team-centered approach, maintenance of confidential information, and an appreciation of a multicultural workplace. C. Exhibits effective communication skills including proper use of agency communication systems. D. Supports all functions that attain and maintain accreditation with regulatory agencies. E. Participates in appropriate professional development programs and in services to attain and maintain competency. F. RELATIONSHIPS (Residents) a. Become personally acquainted with each resident in the unit and develop a solid working knowledge of the background, dynamics, and treatment plan for each resident. b. Consistently keep residents clearly informed of any changes, new direction, and expectations related to the house, and provide adequate information to all new residents as part of the orientation process. c. Follow goals and objectives on residents’ individual treatment plans as well as behavior support plans. d. Schedule medical appointments for residents as well as needed therapy groups, i.e., sexual abuse, alcoholics anonymous, etc. in coordination with Therapist and Shift Supervisor(s). e. Manage conflict, emergencies, and crisis in a professional manner. In accordance with agency policy and Non Violent Crisis Intervention protocol which includes Utilization of Passive Physical Restraint. f. Treat DHHR personnel, school officials, biological, foster, and/or volunteer families with appropriate courtesy and respect. g. Administer medication to residents in accordance with medication administration protocols. h. Complete regular/or necessary personnel related paperwork in a timely manner such as timesheets, leave requests, injury reports, mileage sheets, etc. G. RELATIONSHIPS (Staff). a. Maintain ongoing and open communication with staff. b. Share problems and criticisms in a constructive manner. c. Meet with Shift Supervisor every quarter for staff development conference. d. Ensure that pertinent information is written in staff log for all shifts to read. e. Attend unit team meetings on a scheduled bi-weekly basis, full group and all other required meetings/staffings. H. PROGRAMATIC RESPONSIBILTIES. a. Assist resident’s in-group settings or on an individual basis in personal hygiene skills, care for residents when sick, and administer first aid. b. Respond to the resident's emotional needs; giving acceptance, affection, encouragement, understanding, and guidance. A time is to be set aside daily to meet with the resident individually or collectively. c. Assist in helping resident(s) follow through with goals and objectives of his/her treatment plan. Provide the resident the opportunity to attend Church and/or Sunday school and encourage participation in other Spiritual Enrichment Programs. f. Record pertinent information regarding residents on the daily narrative, staff log, medication record and incident reports. In a detailed manner. I. CULINARY ARTS. a. Maintain knowledge of and implementation of USDA regulations. b. Prepare the noon and evening meals Monday through Friday when residents are present for meals. c. Prepare meals according to posted weekly menus and serve meals at regularly scheduled times. d. Provide nutritional, appealing meals utilizing fresh, seasonal produce and home-cooked methods on a regular basis, including special dietary needs. e. Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and pantry to include: cleaning, sanitizing and straightening kitchen cabinets, cleaning and defrosting refrigerators and freezers, shelves, counter tops, butcher blocks, oven, range, microwave, and sinks on a daily/weekly basis. f. Requisitioning food from the food storage room on a weekly basis. g. Assure availability of appropriate cleaning supplies and cooking supplies and utensils for the kitchen, including clean towels, dishcloths, cleaning rags, bleach, dish detergent, etc. h. Be willing to provide educational opportunities for residents in proper kitchen care, meal preparation, and proper storage of foods. i. Responsible for occasional dinners, luncheons, breakfasts, and other special events as assigned. J. Required driving position. a. This position is defined as one that will require you to drive a motor vehicle as part of your daily work. This position does allow the employee to drive motor vehicles owned or leased by Burlington United Methodist Services, Inc., and to transport employees and residents when and if necessary. K. Performs other duties that fall within the parameters of this position.
