Local Nurse Attains National Certification in Pediatric Emergency Nursing
WILMINGTON, December 20, 2013) — KRISTOPHER T. STARR, RN, MSN, JD, CEN, CPEN has successfully
completed the examination for national certification in pediatric emergency nursing, administered by the Board of
Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) and the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB®).
The Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN™) exam was developed and is delivered in equal partnership
between BCEN and PNCB. This unique exam was developed in response to the Institute of Medicine’s report (2006)
identifying an urgent need for specialized nursing expertise in the management of the emergency health care needs of
pediatric patients.
The pediatric age group presents unique challenges to emergency departments in health care facilities around
the country. To help mitigate those challenges, the CPEN exam highlights the specific needs of pediatric emergency
patients and ensures that nurses earning this new certification are well versed in the emergency care of children.
CPEN is a nationally recognized credential that represents Starr’s commitment to excellence in the profession
of pediatric emergency nursing, and to providing the highest quality of care to his patients. Completing the voluntary
certification process is a symbol of emergency nurses’ dedication to their profession and their patients.
Kristopher Starr is a nurse attorney with Ferry, Joseph & Pearce, P.A. in Wilmington, Delaware. He received
his bachelors and masters in nursing from the University of Delaware in 1996 & 2007. He received his Doctor of Law
from Widener University School of Law in 1999.
