FRANKLIN RECONSTRUCTION
Welcome to a virtual world reconstruction of an Inuvialuit sod house based on a drawing by
Lieutenant George Back.
Back was a British Royal Navy officer who served on an expedition to the western Canadian
Arctic in 1825-27 under the command of Captain John Franklin.
Back’s drawings of the sod house, and the drawings in the background you will see as you enter
this virtual world, are illustrations from a book on the expedition published in 1828.

The reconstruction is based on the remains of a sod house at the Kuukpak archaeological site,
which was excavated in the 1980s by the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.
