Justification for proposal: The Global Science and Engineering Program (GSEP) allows NAU science and engineering majors to internationalize their studies by integrating language study, international training, and professional experience abroad with existing engineering and science degree programs. Language training is a vital cornerstone of the GSEP concept, and the GSEP subplans focus on bringing students to minimal competency within the first three years of study, followed by an entire year of immersion study and professional internship abroad. GSEP does not require any new special courses or additional up-front resources, and promises to bring substantial new resources to Modern Languages by increasing the number of BA-seeking dual-majors in the three targeted languages. Consequently, we have altered to some extent the core requirements to permit students to use aspects of the core either for the completion of required study abroad credit (for the nonGSEP subplans) or for partial completion of internship abroad (for GSEP students). Note, GSEP internships are completed through FRE/GER/SPA 408 across the core requirements and the GSEP subplans. This is an artifact of the need to have a common core for all subplans. A faculty committee consisting of French, German and Spanish faculty as well as the Global Languages chair and Eck Doerry, the GSEP Faculty Coordinator, met with Karen Pugliesi, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, in the spring of 2012 to confirm that such a core configuration for 5 subplans does not violate any ABOR regulations. Also, because of university requirements, this whole degree changes from 35 to 48 units. 9. NCATE designation, if applicable: Initial Plan 10. Yes No If yes, describe the impact and include a letter of response from each impacted academic unit. Answer 12-13 for UCC/ECCC only: 12. A major is differentiated from another major by required course commonality: 24 units of the required credit hours of a major must be unique, (i.e. not common or not dual use as a required element in another major), to that major. Does this plan have 24 units of unique required credit? Yes No 13. Minor: A planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas in which the University already hosts ABOR- approved majors, consisting of at least 18 hours and no more than 24 hours. At least 15 hours of the minor must be unique to that minor to differentiate it from other minors. Does this minor have 15 units of unique required credit? Yes No Does NAU offer an ABOR approved major in this subject matter? Yes No Answer 14-15 for UGC only: 14. If this is a non-thesis plan, does it require a minimum of 24 units of formal graded coursework? Yes No If no, explain why this proposal should be approved. 15. If this is a thesis plan, does it require a minimum of 18 units of formal graded coursework? Yes No If no, explain why this proposal should be approved.
