Honors Latin I Syllabus
2014-15 School Year
Instructor: Mr. Taylor
Class:
Classroom: 2128
Email: ttaylor@theoakwoodschool.org
Course Description: Honors Latin I is an introductory Latin course. Students will
learn basic grammar, vocabulary and morphology of the Latin language. Students
will also learn about Ancient Roman culture, history and mythology via
participation in rehearsed dialogue, games, festivals, military maneuvers, Classical
literature, et al. This course is a prerequisite for Honors Latin II.
Text: Wheelock's Latin (6th edition)
Grades: Each student's grade will be determined by a point system. Each
assignment will be worth a predetermined number of points. Student's scores are
calculated as points earned/total points possible. Points are usually assigned as
follows (but are subject to vary):
Homework
Quizzes
Tests
Projects
50
100
200
100
Please check your grades on Power School often. I do not usually make mistakes
when entering grades, but it can happen. I want to be sure you receive the grade
that you earn, so please be aware of your grades at all times.
A. Homework: Students will be assigned homework on a nightly basis. It is
important to constantly review a new language every day in order to facilitate
learning. Homework assignments are designed to be short, lasting about 30-45
minutes. If you are unable to finish the work assigned in that time period, please let
me know. Studying for tests or quizzes is not considered part of that time. I will not,
however, assign homework the night before a test.
In an effort to help you learn, to teach you how to be a responsible student, as well
as to ensure that you do not fall behind in your classwork, late homework
assignments are not accepted. Exceptions can be made if you are struggling, but
ONLY IF you come to me in advance and talk to me about it. I reserve the right to
grant or decline extensions at my own discretion.
Homework Blog: The homework blog is updated everyday by the end of school.
I will usually update the blog during 3rd period. Students will also be given their
homework assignment in class. Every student is responsible for checking the
homework blog every night. I also put announcements on the home page of my blog
that students will need to check regularly. Because this blog is accessible from
anywhere there is internet access, no excuses will be accepted for not completing
homework (unless there is an emergency).
B. Quizzes: Quizzes may be given at any time, with or without warning. Therefore,
when you are doing your homework, do not rush through it! Instead, think about
what you are doing and learning, and memorize forms that you are not comfortable
with as you go along through the course. If you are absent on a quiz day, you will
have ONE day to make up that quiz (if excused absence) OR it must be done on your
first day returning to school if unexcused. Quizzes may not be made up during class
time.
C. Tests: Tests will be administered every certain number of chapters at the
instructor's discretion. You are expected to study for your tests. I will often review
with you the day(s) before each test. We will spend plenty of time on each topic so
that by the time a test is administered, you should be comfortable with the material.
I will review test format with you the day(s) before each test, and I will tell you what
you need to study to do well on the test.
D. Reading Assignments: Students will also be asked to read Classical texts
(mythology, history, culture, etc.) on a regular basis. Students may also be asked to
write brief papers, answer questions, or create projects that reflect and reinforce
what is being read.
E. Cheating/Plagiarism: Cheating on a test or assignment will result in a zero for
all involved, and a referral to the Honor Council.
F. Absences: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed
and make it up. Students who are absent for extended periods of time will have to
work out a schedule with me to make up the missed work/time. Absences will be
handled according to the Oakwood Handbook.
Please be aware of the student handbook's policies regarding sports. If you are
absent due to a sporting event that is pre-planned, you must inform me in advance
and take any quizzes/tests before you leave for the event if one is scheduled for that
day. Other arrangements may be made at the instructor's discretion, as need
dictates.
G. Extra Help: Please be aware of the extra help times provided to students by
teachers as expressed in the Student Handbook. Extra help time is offered on
Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:20-4:00 p.m. If you need extra help,
please schedule a time to see me during these times. There will be no extra help
sessions during lunch or break times. Extra help during planning periods must be
pre-approved by me at least a week in advance.
