Daniel Sellers Biography Daniel Sellers has a background in adult education. He has managed a community learning centre in Liverpool and taught literacy and numeracy at South Lanarkshire College. For six years he was seconded to a national role developing adult numeracy in Scotland and, latterly, leading the implementation of the Adult Literacies in Scotland 2020 strategic guidance. So far his freelance work has involved development activity for the SQA, strategic planning and research for Ireland’s National Adult Literacy Agency, and a range of educational development work for the NHS in Scotland. At the moment he’s based in Dublin but his work takes him between Ireland and the UK and, when he’s lucky, farther afield. Not much has been written about post-16 education, though. Drawing on his four month stay in Finland at the end of last year, He’ll provide an insight into post-16 vocational education. He’ll give you an overview of the Finnish education system and describe the practice, policies and processes he saw at work in one vocational institute in the west coast city of Vaasa. He’ll also describe what he saw in a gymnasium (upper-secondary school) and in a secondary school. He’ll tell you what it’s like to be in adult education, from his perspective as a student of Swedish. He’ll share with you the ten features that he believes contribute to Finland’s excellent education outcomes.
