Delta Kappa Gamma, Epsilon Chapter Meeting Minutes Morningside Baptist Church May 4, 2015 CALL TO ORDER/WELCOME The fifth and final meeting of 2014-2015 for Epsilon Chapter was held on May 4, 2015 at Morningside Baptist Church. The meeting was called to order by President Ann Banaszak at 5:33 PM with 30 members, 2 guests, and 3 initiates present. President Ann welcomed all. She thanked Emily Wilson for her work on our website and for the capability of making reservations for meetings on the website. She thanked Jane Beach and Hospitality for their help and, also, all who willingly volunteered to help with today’s program. She also reminded everyone about the celebration tea which would be held in the church parlor following the initiation ceremony and thanked Laura Chandler for preparing the food. The attendance sheet was passed around. The collection gift bag for birthday and pin money which benefits World Fellowship was circulated. PRESENTATION OF THE GEORGIA WILKINS GRANT-IN-AID Kermelle Hensley presented the Georgia Wilkins Grant-in Aid to Taylor Renaye Casey from Jordan High School. An excerpt from her essay “Why I Want to be an Educator” was shared. Taylor plans to major in secondary education science with hopes of teaching Biology. Taylor was accompanied by her teacher, Amy Strickland. FOUNDERS’ DAY PROGRAM Emily Wilson led an informative and interactive program with 12 volunteers, “I Have, Who Has?” Information on our 12 founders was presented. SECRETARY’S/TREASURER’S REPORTS The minutes of the March meeting were reviewed silently. Renee Mallory moved that they be accepted, Debbie Ball seconded and the minutes were unanimously accepted. The treasurer’s report was presented by Charlotte Bland. A motion to accept was made by Renee Mallory, seconded by Kermelle Hensley, and passed unanimously. A copy will be on file accompanying the meeting minutes. CORRESPONDENCE President Ann shared a thank-you note from Dr. Stephen Beatty. So far, $1588 has been collected for Eye Care for the Needy. She also read a note from Jane Young asking to be allowed reserve status because she’s moving. Dianne Sharpe made the motion to accept, Carolyn Asbell seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. OLD BUSINESS Schools for Africa update – We are still accepting donations to pay for the education expenses of our teacher in Africa. Anonymous donors have paid for the first two semesters and we almost have enough in donations to pay for the third semester. Our Bunco social, An Evening in Paris, will be held on May 21st at 6:30 at Laura Chandler’s home. There will be wine and cheese and a build-your-own dessert crepe bar. An e-mail reminder will be sent out. NEW BUSINESS Financial Committee Report The new budget was presented by Nancy Johnson. Dues will remain at $95. Nancy made the motion to accept the budget, Jan Greene seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. Thanks went out to Charlotte Bland for her outstanding job as Treasurer. Psi State Convention report was given by Ann Banaszak. The convention was held in Macon with Epsilon members Debbie Ball, Ann Banaszak, Laura Chandler, Carol Lee, and Dianne Sharpe attending. Shining Star Awards were given to Linda McCardle, Kermelle Hensley, Charlotte Bland, Cynthia Swafford, Emily Wilson, Debbie Ball, Dianne Sharpe, Laura Chandler, and Ann Banaszak. Cynthia Swafford was also accepted in the Leadership Class which will be held June 5th-7th in Macon, Ga. Epsilon chapter received 8 recognition awards at the Celebration Luncheon. Awards presented included Exemplary Communication Award, Psi State Winner for Outstanding Program at the Chapter Level, Psi State Award for Chapter Excellence, Psi State Order of the Rose for Membership, Psi State “Setting the Gold Standard” Chapter award, Psi Stae acknowledgement for supporting Early Career Educators, and Psi State acknowledgement of Schools for Africa contributions. ANNOUNCEMENTS Emily Wilson reminded us to check our website, dkgepsilonchapter.weebly.com for updates. The SER Conference will be held July 15-19 in Savannah. It’s not too late to register. Our next meeting will be October 5, 2015 at 6:00. The location will be announced later. REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY FOR ELIZABETH NIXDORF A celebration of life and remembrance ceremony for Elizabeth Nixdorf was presented by Ruth Ball, Ann Banaszak, Renee Mallory, and Cynthia Swafford. INITIATION CEREMONY President Ann Banaszak, Cynthia Swafford, and Emily Wilson led the chapter in the initiation of three new members. They are Shayna Greene, Margaret Hines, and Jennifer Perdue. The chapter joined in singing the DKG song, led by Linda McCardle. ADJOURNMENT/ PRAYER/ CELEBRATION TEA Sybil Beatty led in a prayer and the chapter adjourned to the church parlor for the tea celebrating our new initiates.
