Statement on Research Integrity As an outstanding UK research-intensive university, the University of Exeter recognises that the highest standards of scientific, scholarly and professional integrity must be maintained and promoted. We aim to give due consideration to the ethical, social and environmental issues arising from our activities and are actively working to ensure that research integrity is embedded in the University’s research culture and environment. We are committed to acting in accordance with the principles described in the Concordat to Support Research Integrity and have developed a policy framework which aims to maintain the safety, rights, welfare and dignity of all members of the University and their research participants, and to maintain public trust: Ethics Policy Research Ethics Framework (internal access only) Policy on working with animals Code of Good Practice in the Conduct of Research Misconduct in Research Codes of Conduct Public Interest Disclosure Policy In 2013 and 2014, actions undertaken to promote and embed research integrity included the following: new regular training and CPD sessions for research students, early career researchers and research groups were developed and delivered the University Ethics Committee reviewed its Terms of Reference and membership was changed to encourage the sharing of best practice between Colleges a Dual Assurance portfolio on Research Integrity, Ethics and Governance was introduced, creating new reporting links with the University Council new guidance was developed on the investigation of research misconduct for research students the Research Ethics Framework was developed and implemented an online research ethics review application system was designed and is currently being implemented ongoing review and implementation of improved research governance and licencing systems, following on from legislative changes, a positive HTA inspection in 2012, recommendations from the University’s internal audit process and the drive to reach best practice standards increased frequency of discussions on matters relating to research integrity, ethics and governance at the University’s Research and Knowledge Transfer Management Group the University hosted a Nuffield Council on Bioethics event to explore research culture active involvement in national networks and events to share best practice and promote research integrity One internal investigation was undertaken in 2014 in relation to concerns about plagiarism and, following the investigation, disciplinary proceedings were commenced and a member of staff was dismissed. At present, the procedures for investigating and reporting misconduct are considered to be transparent, robust and appropriate to the needs of the organisation. An ongoing action plan is in place to ensure that continued progress towards our all our goals is maintained. Developments and initiatives are regularly monitored by the Dual Assurance Research Integrity, Ethics and Governance portfolio and by the University Ethics Committee.
