BOULDER CREEK NEWS
Principally Speaking
Dear Parents,
As we begin a new year I would like to review some procedures.
Please remember that the safety of your children is a top priority at
our school. Please review the parent drop-off/pick-up map is
included with this newsletter. Students may not be dropped off prior
to 8:05 when supervision is available. For the safety of students do
not drop your child off in cross walk areas or in the staff parking lot.
The drop off area is in the west parking lot at the gate.
At Boulder Creek we work very diligently at teaching children
responsibility. We appreciate your support at home with this as
well. If your child forgets their lunch, the cafeteria will provide a
cheese sandwich, apple, and milk. Forgotten homework or
instruments provide an excellent lesson in responsibility. Allow
your child to have these natural consequences when the lessons are
in a safer environment rather than when they are older and the
consequences are much higher.
Thank you for your continued support of Boulder Creek. Happy
New Year!
Sincerely,
Karen K. Coleman

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Monday, January 16th – No School
CONGRATULATIONS to Gilbert Public Schools volunteer
of the month…our own Beth Jones!
Beth has been a volunteer at Boulder Creek Elementary for several years.
She has served as our PTSO president and treasurer, organized and helped
at numerous school events, and painted murals in our halls. It is hard to
imagine what Boulder Creek would be like without her help and support.
Thank You Beth.

FITNESS AT HOME
It is recommended that kids receive 60 minutes of activity daily,
most of which should be aerobic. Look for a new exciting activity
every month in the Boulder Creek News Letter.
Trampoline
If you've ever seen a kid jump on a trampoline, you know they can
jump for hours and hours -- without getting bored. Good news -- All
that time spent jumping is great for their health. A backyard
trampoline gets the kids outside, taking deep breaths of fresh air.
Many trampolines are now affordably priced, and can be purchased
with an enclosure for added safety. Kids can do simple exercises on
the trampoline that are great for building muscle tone and strength,
but are still a lot of fun. Try having the kids jog in place, jump from
side to side, or do small jumping squats. And, remember,
trampolines are also great exercise for parents!

Mr. Starks
A Note from the Nurse’s office:
Happy New Year to all. It’s time to start thinking about Kindergarten registration and what
may be needed for immunizations. Although required immunizations are not needed to
register your child, they are needed to start school next year. Be sure to bring your shot
records when you register your child. The record will be reviewed and you will get a notice
listing any shots that are missing. Please stop in the health office even if you do not have a
copy of their record. Sometimes we can look up the record or I can let you know how many
of each shot is required. I also review the health history for any medical needs students
may have such as food allergies, asthma, diabetes, etc.
ATTENTION 5TH GRADE PARENTS: In preparing for next year, students who are 11 and
in 6th grade are required to have a Tdap and a Meningococcal vaccine. If your 5 th grader is
11 please contact your primary care provider to see if they need the vaccines or to
schedule an appointment to get the vaccines. As soon as your child has received the
vaccines send in a copy of the record so we can update our files. If your child is not 11 yet
but will be by the time they enter 6th grade or they have not received the vaccines, make an
appointment after he/she turns 11 to get the shots then send in the record. If you have any
question or want to know if your child needs any immunizations or want the location of free
immunization clinics, please feel free to call the Health Office.
Reminder letters are going home for those student’s who failed hearing or vision, were sent
a referral and 2 months have passes with no response. Each referral has a section that
needs to be completed by the examining physician and returned to the health office. These
help me evaluate the screening process so I can make improvements as well as providing
valuable tools that will help your child’s learning. The information may be shared with your
child’s teacher so they know of any special needs your child has such as preferential
seating in the classroom. Please complete the lower section of the reminder letter and
return to the health office as soon as possible.
As many of you know the health office keeps a supply of spare clothing in case of those
untimely accidents. I am in need of replenishments in the smaller sizes for boys and girls
sizes, 5T to 8/10, shirts and pants or shorts, and larger size pants for boys. If you have
some clothes that your children no longer fit in, please consider a donation to the health
office here at Boulder.

NEHS News
The National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) will be sponsoring two great
programs to start out the New Year with a giving back spirit. Please help if you
“CAN”!
Cans 4 Cancer
Everyone has been affected by cancer in some shape or form. Now we “Can” help out
with the simple task of saving cans. Please have your child/children bring in empty
soda cans starting January 5- March 5. NEHS will clean, crush, and de-tab the
cans. The tabs will be sent to the Ronald McDonald House Charity. The cans will be
recycled and the money will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
United Through Reading
United Through Reading is an organization that sends new children’s books to
deployed soldiers. The soldier is then recorded reading the story on a DVD. The
DVD and book is sent to their child/ children back at home. What a great way for
families to connect when our soldiers are over seas! If each student brings in $1.00,
Boulder Creek can pay for 121 soldiers to read a book to their children. Please feel
free to look at the program online at Unitedthroughreading.org. We will be collecting
money January 5- January 31.
All Cans and $ 1.00’s should be given to the homeroom teacher!
