JOB PURPOSE

To coordinate peer and volunteer services across Lifeline’s recovery-orientated integrated community based treatment system for problem drug and alcohol users in Hull.

To develop and coordinate a large team of active peer mentors and volunteers to: provide resources to Lifeline’s services; support and motivate service users to achieve their goals through all stages of their individual recovery journey; and facilitate access to recovery communities.

To ensure that progression to mentoring (and recovery) is an obtainable and clearly visible transition for service users.

To work in partnership with recovery providers in Hull to ensure consistency of provision across treatment services, recovery networks and communities.

To ensure that peer mentors and volunteers provide effective services, through appropriate recruitment, training and supervision processes.

To work effectively, collaboratively, and flexibly, with colleagues, outside agencies and commissioners, to ensure that high standards of performance are maintained.

To work within a strengths-based, recovery-orientated, change and outcomes focused approach, which promotes service users and communities as responsible co-producers of health, wellbeing and recovery.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Service provision:

In collaboration with all components of the integrated service, and under the direction of the Service

Manager, to identify where peer mentors and volunteers from the community can: support the delivery of activities and services; help effectively to engage and retain service users; assist service users achieve recovery goals; and promote access and engagement with recovery communities.

To support peer mentors to act as ‘recovery champions’ to ensure that service users in treatment can visualise the route to recovery and abstinence.

To work proactively across the service to ensure the role and value of peer mentors and volunteers are promoted and accessible at all stages of a service user’s recovery journey.

To organise and develop peer mentoring activities in collaboration with other agencies, and identify and build links with community to support recovery within the community, including local recovery networks, mutual aid groups and service user forums.

To promote, and recruit to, volunteering opportunities within Lifeline Hull, ensuring Lifeline ’s equal opportunities policy is upheld, and opportunities are accessible to individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.

To develop and coordinate in-house and external training for peer mentors and volunteers which will enable them to contribute effectively, appropriately and safely to the delivery of activities and interventions and encourage service users to achieve sustained recovery.

To build and develop peer mentors personal strengths, social networks and recovery capital (social,

To coordinate and support regular supervision of mentors and volunteers, ensuring that any student placements requirements are fulfilled, any problems are resolved, and volunteers are involved in meaningful and rewarding work.

Ensure that mentors and volunteers have clear roles and responsibilities, regular supervisions and personal development plans and goals.

To support mentors and volunteers to build skills portfolios and gain certificates/qualification to evidence internal and external training, supported by further Education, Training and Employment

(ETE) opportunities.

To work closely with recovery coordinators and practitioners to ensure that any volunteers or mentors currently in treatment maintain recovery focus through coordinated planning.

To develop and coordinate appropriate peer mentor and volunteer policies and procedures.

To record all peer mentor/volunteer activity documentation and notes to a high standard and within required time frames, and to contribute to producing required quarterly commissioner reports.

To work collaboratively and proactively with other members of staff to ensure that services are fully coordinated and are working collectively towards the achievement of recovery goals and positive outcomes for each client.

Performance and personal management:

To work flexibly to provide adequate cover for all aspects of the service.

To work alongside and provide support and supervision to peer mentors and volunteers.

To work within, and contribute positively to, an appropriate culture of established values and expectations embracing and implementing change.

To be responsible for performance management at an individual level through: self-management; delivery of goals and tasks set; delivery of contractual requirements; targets and outcomes; and reporting progress.

To actively engage in opportunities for learning and development at an individual and team level.

To comply with operational management systems of supervision, objectives, appraisal and induction.

To comply with data collection procedures and reporting to ensure effective recording of performance monitoring, outcomes and service user information.

To adhere to the implementation of risk management procedures (including child and adult safeguarding protocols) taking personal responsibility for keeping up to date with the requirements of these procedures.

To contribute to the continuous improvement of quality and performance of recovery support interventions.

Service development:

To take a lead in specific targeted service developments as required.

To form productive working relationships with external agencies and professionals, in order to add value to volunteering and community involvement throughout Hull.

To provide peer mentors and volunteers with opportunities to consult on service development and work jointly to develop services, as appropriate, under the direction of management.

 To contribute to the sustainability of Lifeline’s growth through the delivery of best practice and quality services and achieving targets and lasting outcomes for beneficiaries.

To ensure an appropriate level of strategic awareness at industry, local, organisational and service levels.

GENERAL DUTIES

To present a professional appearance, help maintain an orderly working environment, and act at all times to uphold the good reputation of Lifeline Project.

To ensure that all visitors to the service (including service users, families/carers, professionals and the

To attend meetings at appointed times, maintain professional personnel and service user records and meet deadlines.

To work flexibly across the whole service, including providing duty, late working and weekend cover as required.

To proactively maintain professional knowledge and practice and attend, use and contribute to supervision and team meetings effectively.

To assess risk and safeguarding issues, undertake risk and need assessments when appropriate and report any potential risk and safeguarding issues to ensure staff, service users and children are protected.

To work within professional boundaries maintaining safety and appropriate confidentiality at all times.

To contribute to organisational initiatives as required.

 To demonstrate commitment to Lifeline’s statements of Mission, Vision and Values and strategy, ensuring that they inform, and are embedded within, service delivery and practice.

To read and comply with all published Lifeline policies and procedures, at the start of employment and whenever they are added to or changed (as made available on the Lifeline staff website).

To work flexibly to undertake such other reasonable duties and responsibilities, at any location within reasonable daily travel from your main place of work.

Peer Mentor and Volunteer Coordinator

Experience (through paid or voluntary work)

Experience of developing and supporting volunteering, peer mentoring or community involvement schemes.

Experience of delivering presentations and training to groups and individuals.

Experience of developing policies and guidelines for peer mentoring/volunteering or similar programmes.

Knowledge

Understanding and knowledge of the harmful effects associated with drug and alcohol misuse in relation to health, social welfare, housing, employability and personal relationships.

A clear understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries.

Knowledge of recruitment processes and procedures.

An awareness of current national policies on substance misuse and the strategies that influence the priorities of treatment services.

An awareness of the treatments and interventions available to substance misusers.

Knowledge and understanding of policies related to the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults and how these influence practice.

An awareness and understanding of models of recovery, and the role of peers, volunteers and the community in supporting recovery.

Education and Training

NVQ level 3 in relevant work area (e.g. Health and Social Care, NVQ Assessors Award D32/D33) and/or equivalent professional qualification (or overseas equivalent qualification).

Skills and abilities

Ability to organise and plan processes cooperatively involving other parts of the service to meet deadlines.

Methodical and successful personal organisation including maintaining own written work plans and meeting deadlines.

Ability to provide support and supervision to peer mentors, volunteers and students.

Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures.

Commitment to working collaboratively with co-workers, colleagues in other agencies, and external services to facilitate the delivery of effective volunteering and peer mentoring support services.

Ability to use a range of techniques and approaches in the planning and delivery of induction/training events/programmes.

Ability to produce written reports to a standard that is acceptable to a range of audiences (internal and external).

Ability to engage with communities to identify and access potential recovery resources and capital.

Commitment to sharing knowledge, expertise and learning with colleagues (co-workers, volunteers, other professionals) in order to improve standards of practice within the service and the wider treatment environment.
