UVIC ORIENTATION LEADER APPLICATION 2015 The UVic Orientation Volunteer Program brings together a diverse group of students to serve as ambassadors and mentors for the University of Victoria and their respective faculties. Volunteers are responsible for providing new students with a positive introduction to UVic and contribute to a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. Volunteers assist with a variety of UVic Orientation programs and events, including, but not limited to Jump Start Tours, Transfer and Mature Student Welcome, Graduate Student Orientation, Family Orientation, Residence Move-In, Residence Orientation, Amazing Race, Project Serve Day and the largest event – New Student Welcome. The UVic Orientation Volunteer Program offers personal and professional development through a combination of formal training and hands-on experience. The OL, JrOL, and ROL positions all require the completion of an application, screening, and training. The TL and PA positions only require registration in our database at www.myvolunteerpage.com (search under University of Victoria) and completion of position-specific training. Candidates will be required to attend a brief screening interview prior to being selected for a position/role. Selections will be made on an ongoing basis until the program reaches capacity. Successful candidates will be eligible to volunteer with UVic Orientation for the duration of their time at UVic. Orientation Leader (OL) Share your UVic student experience as a mentor and leader for new students as part of New Student Welcome – Tuesday, September 8, 2015. In pairs, Orientation Leaders guide groups of approximately 40-45 students, sharing their own experiences and creating connections on campus. This is your chance to develop and use a wide range of skills while making a huge difference in new students’ experience at UVic! Orientation Leaders will follow the New Student Welcome schedule as indicated below: Morning - Attend a final briefing, which includes the confirmed run-through of the day, last-minute reminders and an opportunity for questions. Muffins and coffee will be provided. - Check in your group members as they arrive on the quad. - Lead your group to CARSA for the Opening Ceremony and Spirit Rally. Afternoon - Lead your group to the President’s Barbeque lunch on the quad and ensure your group stays together. - Guide your group on a tour of faculty-specific buildings. - Lead your group to their Faculty Academic Experience, library tour, Vikes welcome and First Peoples’ House greeting. - Take your group to the campus-services Information Fair to end the day. Junior Orientation Leader (JrOL) Junior Orientation Leaders shadow Orientation Leaders, helping move new students to their various presentations and activities throughout New Student Welcome day – Tuesday, September 8, 2015. Junior OLs will answer new students' questions as they walk around campus and help keep track of time to ensure the group arrives at all stops on schedule. Junior Orientation Leaders will follow the New Student Welcome schedule as indicated below: Morning - Attend a final briefing, which includes the confirmed run-through of the day, last-minute reminders and an opportunity for questions. Muffins and coffee will be provided. - Help check in your group members as they arrive on the quad. - Accompany your group to CARSA for the Opening Ceremony and Spirit Rally. Residence Orientation Leader (ROL) Residence Orientation Leaders (ROLs) are responsible for welcoming new students and their families to campus and contributing to a positive, supportive atmosphere. These students help out with a variety of undergraduate and residence-specific orientation activities in exchange for guaranteed housing in Residence. This leadership position offers a range of professional development opportunities and the chance to form lasting social connections with both new and current students. Residence Orientation Leaders are expected to assist with the following programs: - Residence Move-In (Sunday, September 6, 2015) - Residence Orientation (Monday, September 7, 2015) 6 - New Student Welcome (Tuesday, September 8, 2015) Please see the “Orientation Leader” tab for a detailed role description Six Weeks of Orientation (September 9 to October 16, 2015) ROLs will help with at least one event during this period January Residence Orientation (January 3 to January 8, 2016) ROLs will help with at least one event during this period Please note that Residence Orientation Leaders must complete the Residence Orientation Leader training program that runs September 3 through September 5, 2015. Those who volunteer as Residence Orientation Leaders are eligible for guaranteed housing in Residence and the cocurricular record. 7
