Careers Workshop for SML students
‘What to do when you don’t know what to do
– a workshop for finalists.’
When? Monday 30th Nov. 12-1pm

Who? Open primarily to SML final-year students (UG) but other students are
welcome, too!
This workshop will include case studies and strategies for SML
finalists who may be finding it tough to plan their next steps upon
graduation.

As part of the Employability Week, the Modern Languages Society has
arranged an event for you second years.
If you are already starting to worry about your year abroad, which is
completely natural, we have the event for you. On Monday 30th November in
the Courtyard Café (at the bottom of the Old Library Building) there will be an
informal event where 4th years and Erasmus students can advise you on any
worries you may have and maybe even give you some inspiration! These
students have been all around the world, for example to Canada, Europe, Latin
America or China on their years abroad, and they are eager to share their
experiences with you. Many of these students will have worked on their year
abroad and can offer you help with applying for job placements overseas.
Due to the venue’s limited capacity, please reserve a place by emailing
modlangsoc@newcastle.ac.uk or by signing up outside the LRC on the Modern
Languages noticeboard by Friday 27th November.

CREATIVE, ENTERPRISING & ENTREPRENEURIAL??
This is the graduate profile you need to stand out from the

crowd in the global economy of the 21 century!
The Business Challenge is a fast paced 24 hour
competition which will help you to develop this profile
Working in a team with other Languages, Maths and Stats and
Computing students over a 24hr period you will develop, plan and
present a business solution to a real business scenario that will be
unveiled on the day by a well-known employer, GCHQ (the UK’s
electronic intelligence agency)!
You don’t need any business knowledge to participate in FLUX. You will be fully
briefed at the start of the event and facilitators will be on hand to help you
throughout. On the day you’ll be aiming to put together an innovative solution to a
difficult real world business challenge – with the chance to meet business experts
and potential recruiters along the way…

Come and listen to Mike, a 2013 graduate from the School of Modern
Languages, talk about what he did after university and how he got onto an
unlikely and atypical career path for a languages graduate. Hopefully, you’ll get
some ideas if you’re thinking about what step to take next in your life, now
that for some of you university is drawing to a close!

The Modern Languages, Mathematics and Statistics,
Computing Science BUSINESS CHALLENGE
When? Wednesday 2nd Dec. 1-7.45pm, followed by a drinks reception
Where? Great North Museum, Main Room
Who? Registered students (UG&PG) – registration is now open
Dramatically increase your employability skills in the
space of 24 hours
This unique event has been set up for you by your own tutors with support from the Rise Up
team. Working in a team of six with students from Maths and Computing, you will develop,
plan and present a business strategy which has been set by GCHQ tackling a real scenario
that will be unveiled on the day. (If you don’t know who GCHQ are, you should do – they are
one of the UK’s main intelligence agencies and they are looking to recruit Linguists).

As well as GCHQ representatives there will be other employers present to guide you through
the day and observe how your team works under pressure – they will be keeping an eye out
for potential employees as well! You’ll be put under pressure throughout a whole day of
intense activity but you’ll find it hugely rewarding and participating will help you get your ideal
job when you graduate – or even think about self-employment or freelance work.

Skills Session Day offered by Teach First (1)
Who? Mostly Finalists but open to all SML students.
Session 1: Leading Self (10-11am in Armstrong Building 2.50)
Understanding your motivations, behaviours, emotions and strengths is key to
being effective personally, professionally and when interacting with others.
Whether you’re looking to develop a better self-awareness or thinking about
how your behaviours influence others this session will support you to
understand yourself better and use your strengths to full effect. Through
individual tasks, small group discussions, group activities and reflection, this
session will provide you with the tools to understand your strengths,
weaknesses, motivations, social style and how you interact with others. You
will then have an opportunity to apply this increased self- awareness to your
future personal and professional goals and plans.
Session 2: Preparing for an Assessment Centre (12-1pm in
Armstrong Building 1.03)
This session will prepare you for the key activities that employers will look for
at an Assessment Centre for a graduate role. It will provide guidance and
prepare you for the structure of an assessment centre and look at the key
exercises you might expect.

Our world changes, fast. To be successful you need to be ahead of the game
and stand out from the crowd with something different. But how? Would you
know how to articulate your creativity to an employer? Do you even realise
when you are being innovative? Using real life applications, this session will
give you the toolkit to think outside, around and through the box and ensure
your ideas come to life. We’ll show you how to verbalise your creativity to
others and approach any challenge with a solution focused mind set.
Booking: Due to the venues’ limited capacity, YOU MUST SIGN UP FOR EACH
OF THESE SESSIONS by Tuesday 1st December 2015. You can do so at the
reception of the School of Modern Languages’ Office (6th floor of the Old
Library Building).

Meet the Alumni Evening Wine Reception

Open to ALL SML students (UG and PG)
We are inviting 60 SML students to a wine reception where you will
be given a unique opportunity to meet recent SML graduates from all
sectors of life. They are in a diverse range of graduate careers and all
have established professional careers and they’d love to share with
you the choices they made and what they are doing at the moment.
This will be an invaluable opportunity for you to start practicing
networking skills while benefiting from the tips and wisdom of recent
SML graduates. This is a great opportunity to discuss the transition
from student to working life, with people most likely to understand
the issues you are considering!
You can purchase tickets from the Modern Languages Society (members: £3,
non-members: £6). All of the monies collected will be used by the MLS to
organise social activities.

A Day in the Life of a Postgraduate Student

Who? All UG students welcome
Considering the option of a Masters or PhD once you graduate?
Come along for a one-off session especially designed for Modern Languages
students to answer all your questions and queries. Current SML Postgraduate
students will be there to talk to you about their own experiences and help
make your decision that little bit easier.

Who: open to ALL SML students (UG and PG) and staff!
The Modern Languages Society will be holding a careers-themed quiz night on
6th December at 8pm. All staff and students are welcome!
There will be 5 rounds (pictures, general knowledge, popular culture, sport and
careers). It costs £1 per person to enter and prizes will be available!
