COUNTRY EXAMPLES ON INTEGRATION OF PEACEBUILDING INTO ECD Philippines There are ECD centres in Zamboanga Sibugay and Albarka in Basilan that provide sessions on Peace building for parents with preschool-aged children. Plan supported a local partner in the development of modules through a workshop facilitated by a clinical psychologist specialized in armed-conflict settings. Two sets of training were conducted, 1st was training of trainers participated by the daycare workers, Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer, Municipal Health Officer. 2nd training was the skills enhancement training focusing on “Heal 3-5 module”. So far, they have trained 47 Day Care Workers, 4 MSWOs, 4 MHOs, and 7 staffs from the Integrated Resource Development for Tri-People (IRDT) -- all of them considered caregivers. Part of this ECD project, a training for parents was organized particularly the mothers for the following reasons: 1. Integration of peacebuilding is significant to any type of humanitarian and community development projects, especially in conflict-affected communities. The peacebuilding effort is of great help in mobilizing people in the community. 2. Part of the sustainability mechanism for the project. The parents particularly the mothers are the primary caregivers to their children. They can sustain the support even after the project’s life and they can apply the same to other children in need. A total of 59 mothers group organized in 31 ECD Centres. Each group composed of 15-20 mothers, regularly attending the session. Apart of integrated ECD services, Peace Education is incorporated into existing curricula for Preschool Teachers at the University. Peace education is provided to children but also to their parents. In the context of Bosnia which is the post war country, education of parents in peace is the key for their parenting skills but also for peace building and reconciliation in the country. They have developed two teacher manuals which are for children 3 to 5 and 6 to 7 based on Spanish Peace education material, and had supported TOT along to continued training of preschool teachers Contact person: Selena Bajraktarevic, Health and ECD Officer – UNICEF
