Rocky Hill School Upper School Athletic/Co-Curricular Requirements General Rules to Follow: All students must have an up-to-date physical and health form on file with the School Nurse prior to participating in any practices or games. (Pre Participation Physical Evaluations (PPE) will be held for students in late August). All new students to the Upper School must participate in at least one competitive athletic program during their first academic year. In the fall, they must also participate in one of the RHS offered athletic/co-curricular programs. This assures that there are adequate numbers to support our programs, and involves new students in the school community immediately. Ability to participate in programs that are limited in numbers of participants is based upon seniority, date of registration, try-out and instructor discretion. All programs are dependent on student participation and are subject to cancellation if there is low interest. Athletic/Co-Curricular Program Requirements and Options: As graduate candidates at Rocky Hill School, students are required to participate in two (2) credited seasons of after-school athletic/co-curricular programs (refer to requirements below). These programs are graded on a pass/fail basis. The primary reason for this requirement is to meet the Rhode Island Secondary School Physical Education standard set forth by the Department of Education. This requirement also aligns with Rocky Hill School's belief that community, teamwork and sportsmanship, along with being an active member of the school community, reflects the school motto, Know Thyself. After school athletic/co-curricular requirement options include: [To meet the minimal requirement] A. Participate in one (1) season of RHS competitive athletic program, along with one (1) other athletic/co-curricular option of choice. B. Participate in two (2) seasons of the following RHS programs: a. Lifetime Fitness b. Waterfront Recreation c. Karate d. Recreational Sailing [Excludes: team manager, athletic department aid, drama production or basketball shot clock keeper] C. Participate in two (2) seasons of RHS drama production, along with one (1) other athletic/co-curricular option of choice. [Excludes: team manager, athletic department aid, or basketball shot clock keeper] D. Participate in three (3) season of RHS drama production, along with the spring Athletic Alternative requirement “Couch to 5k" program (sponsored by the drama department). [Not open to freshmen or new students, Athletic Alternative forms will need to be filed with the Athletic Director] E. Participate in an Athletic Alternative (AA) season, along with one (1) season of RHS athletic/co-curricular program. [Athletic Alternative forms will need to be filed with the Athletic Director] Team Managers, Athletic Department Aids, Basketball Shot Clock Keeper: In order to fulfill one (1) season of the requirement by being a team manager, athletic department aid, or basketball shot clock keeper, the interested student must participate in either: A. One (1) season of a RHS competitive athletic program or B. Two (2) seasons of programs listed in option B (above). C. Other exceptions may be made in case of injury, sickness or other and will be decided on a case-by-case basis. Upper School Athletic/Co-Curricular Requirements (Spring 2014) Athletic Alternative (AA) Information: Special permission is required to participate in an Athletic Alternative (AA) and is only granted on a case-by-case basis. Certain program qualifications must be met in order to receive AA acceptance (please see AA information forms). Only one AA season can be counted towards the graduation requirement per year. Interested students must petition the Athletic Director and Head of Upper School in advance in order to gain AA acceptance. Prior to the start of the applicable season, an AA application must be filled out and handed in to the Athletic Director. After the season has ended, the student will be required to hand in an AA Supervisor Evaluation Form. Please see the link under Athletic Requirements & Forms on the Rocky Hill School Athletics Webpage to find the Athletic Alternative Application and Supervisor Evaluation forms. RIIL Individual Sport Participation and Athletic Alternatives: If interested in participating as an individual through the Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) in sports such as swimming, gymnastics and track, an Athletic Alternative form will need to be filled out in order to get credit for practicing. Also, please be aware that liability waivers and a fee will apply for all RIIL individual programs (covers officials/rental space for competitions). Postgraduate (PG) Information: In order for a PG to participate in competitive sports in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) league, the following requirements must be met: Cannot turn 19 prior to September 1 of the academic year. Must fill out and file waivers that must then be accepted via majority vote by the leagues' ADs. PGs are not allowed to participate in Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) competitive sports. All PGs interested in participating in a NEPSAC league competitive sport must contact the Athletic Director prior to the season in particular so that proper waivers can be filled out and voted upon. Medical and Religious Waivers: Athletic/co-curricular requirement waivers may be requested based upon religious beliefs and in certain circumstances related to a short or long-term physical restriction. If possible, those requesting a waiver are encouraged to participate in a RHS athletic/co-curricular in some fashion as to build a sense of school community (ex: drama department, team manager, athletic department student aid, scorekeeper, basketball shot clock operator). If an individual has a short or long-term physical restriction but is able to perform the tasks required for such duties as team manager, scorekeeper, athletic department student aid or basketball shot clock operator, the individual will be required to choose such a responsibility to fulfill the graduation credit(s). In order to receive athletic/co-curricular requirement waivers, the individual/family requesting one must fill out the appropriate form and have it signed by the Head of the Upper School and the Athletic Director. A copy of this form will be kept on file in the athletic department. Please see the link under Athletic Requirements & Forms on the Rocky Hill School Athletics Webpage to find the Athletic/Co-curricular Waiver Form.
