1. What do I need to do to receive the Get There Scholarship?
If you are eligible you will receive an email from the scholarships team providing you with a link to order your
scholarship. You can choose between a travel ticket if you will be commuting within the North East region or an
accommodation discount if you are living in University managed accommodation. You need to order your
scholarship by midnight on 28 October 2016 or you will no longer be eligible.
If you order a travel ticket, you must upload a suitable passport style photo via ‘my photo’ before your ticket can
be produced. Failure to upload a suitable photo will result in a delay to your ticket being available for collection.
2. How many scholarships are available?
There are an unlimited number of these scholarships available - everyone who is eligible will be invited to order
their scholarship via the Online Store. Invitations will be sent via email.
3. What happens if I don’t order my scholarship by 28 October 2016?
Any eligible student who fails to order their scholarship by 28 October 2016 will no longer be eligible to receive
the travel ticket. Those living in University managed accommodation will default to the £600 discount. You have
until 4 November to collect your travel ticket. Any uncollected travel tickets will be returned to the travel company
after this date and CANNOT be reissued.
4. What if I don't want a travel ticket because I have my own car to travel to and from the
University?
The travel ticket can be used on a number of public transport services, and it's valid in the evenings and
weekends too – it's not just for travelling to and from university.
If you don’t want the travel ticket, you can choose to have a £600 discount on any University managed
accommodation in your first year.
5. How long is my travel ticket valid for?
The travel ticket is valid for the academic year, which is September 2016 to September 2017 and this can be
used an unlimited number of times, 7 days a week. You must have personally applied for the Get There travel
ticket for this to be available to collect when you register to start your course.
6. If I choose to use my own car rather than receive the travel ticket, can I receive money off
parking charges at the University?
No.
7. How do I know if I'm classed as 'local' or 'regional'?
To check whether you're eligible for the Local or Regional travel ticket, please check your term-time address
postcode against the list in the 2016/17 Get There Scholarship guidance notes (.pdf).
If you are studying at Hartlepool 6th Form College or East Durham College you will automatically be eligible for
the Regional travel ticket, regardless of your term-time address.
8. Where can I travel with the local ticket?
You can travel within Tyne and Wear; across the entire Metro system, Shields Ferry, Arriva, Go North East and
Stagecoach buses and on Northern Rail services between Sunderland and Blaydon.
9. Where can I travel with the regional ticket?
You will receive a local ticket plus an additional ticket allowing you to travel in Northumberland, Durham and
Teesside on Arriva, Go North East and Stagecoach buses. Please note, the only rail service the travel ticket is
valid for use on is the Northern Rail service between Sunderland and Blaydon.
10. When will I receive my scholarship?
If you ordered the accommodation discount, this will be applied to your 2 nd instalment, and will show on your
February 2017 invoice. If you are living in The Forge – U Student Village this will show on your January 2017
invoice.
If you ordered the travel ticket, you will be given this by a member of the Educational Partnership Office at your
College once term has started. You will receive exact details about this during enrolment at your College.
11. Can the £600 accommodation discount be used with The Forge - U Student Village?
Yes. The £550 accommodation discount can be used with all University accommodation, including The Forge - U
Student Village. The Forge - U Student Village is a private accommodation centre, owned and managed by U
Student, working in partnership with the University of Sunderland.
