Diagnosis and treatment is provided within psychiatric wards, both forensic and general psychiatric wards, and also within policlinics in prisons or usual psychiatric policlinics. Psychiatric evaluations for judicial purposes are provided by private psychiatrists and psychologists working independently for the courts who engage these specialists. For difficult cases it is possible to do psychiatric evaluations while the person is admitted to psychiatric ward. It is mandatory to send all psychiatric evaluations intended for use within the judicial system to The Norwegian Board of Forensic Medicine. This organ provides qualitative control and must accept the evaluations before they can be used in the judicial system.
