OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSIT Y CFR/OSU Pediatrics JOURNAL CLUB Guidelines for Facilitating and/or Presenting at the CFR/CHS Journal Club What is the CFR-OSU PEDS Journal Club? Meetings where members from the Center for Family Resilience and the OSU Department of Pediatrics come together to critically review an article from the human science scientific literature for both scientific merit and clinical applicability. What are the goals of the CFR-OSU PEDS Journal Club? To increase participant knowledge regarding topics common to the human and health sciences To increase awareness regarding the role of human science within healthcare and the broader community To increase communication across disciplines To encourage collaboration To generate ideas for interdisciplinary programs and research Who is the audience for our Journal Club? Center for Health Sciences: Medical students, interns, and residents in pediatrics. Faculty facilitators: Colony Fugate, D.O., Jeremy Jones, D.O. College of Human Sciences: Students and faculty from the College of Human Sciences Faculty facilitators: Dr. Joe Grzywacz, Dr. Amanda Harrist What types of articles are selected for Journal Club? Scholarly articles from the human science literature which address areas of importance to health science. Articles should have a clinically applicable focus rather than be purely theoretical. Please forward your selected article to Drs. Fugate and Harrist 2 weeks before the meeting. Journal Club Format: When: Journal club meets the forth Wednesday in August, October, January, March and May from 3:30-5:00 Where: Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences, 1111 West 17th Street, Tulsa, OK room D107; a GoToMeeting.com link will be provided to OSU faculty and graduate students in the College of Human Sciences. Structure: Introduction (40 min) A faculty member from the College of Human Sciences will give a 40 minute lecture or case based presentation reviewing current knowledge and theories in human science related to the topic at hand. The objective of this academic exercise is to build a foundation for discussion and critical review of the scholarly article. Article Critiques (40 mins) Discussion and critical review of the scholarly article facilitated by an attending physician and assigned human science faculty member. Critical review will use the Critical Appraisal Skills Program Format. http://www.casp-uk.net/#!casp-tools-checklists/c18f8 Clinical Application and Review (5 mins) A Human Sciences faculty member will provide a formal “wrap-up” session to review the take home points from the lecture and article review in an effort to emphasize clinical relevance and promote on-going collaboration.
