Mayor opens affordable Curo homes for
Trowbridge
On Monday 11 August 2014, the Mayor of Trowbridge, Councillor Glyn
Bridges, officially opened Centenary Court, a development of 24 affordable
homes built by housing and support organisation Curo and named to
commemorate the Great War.
Amongst the first people to move into the new homes are Victoria and
Marcus Gobby, who were welcomed into their newly-built one-bed
apartment by the Mayor.
Victoria said: “We both grew up in the area and work nearby – Marcus is
an assistant manager in Chippenham and I’m a supermarket team leader
in Trowbridge – so we really wanted to find a place of our own close-by.
We’ve found it difficult to find anywhere affordable and it’s been a long
wait for us, but so worth it – we really love living here.”
Curo has invested over £600,000 into the scheme with additional funding
coming from the Homes and Communities Agency. Of the homes, 18 are
being made available through Wiltshire Council’s Homes for Wiltshire
scheme on Affordable Rents which are below market values.
The remaining six houses are being sold through Curo’s Shared Ownership
scheme which helps people get on the housing ladder by part-buying,
part-renting their new home, making home ownership possible without
the large deposits required conventionally.
Demand has been high, with all 18 rented properties now let and only two
Shared Ownership homes remaining for sale.
Jane Alderman, Head of Curo’s Development team, said: “At Curo we’re
committed to increasing the number of homes in the region and have
plans to build around 250 new affordable homes every year. We’re
especially pleased to have delivered these much-needed homes on what
was a prominent brownfield site that had sat derelict for several years.”
Toby Sturgis, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for strategic planning
said: “These are fantastic modern affordable homes that I am sure will
benefit many families for years to come. It is also fitting that in this year
of remembering and commemorating the First World War this
development is called Centenary Court.”
The homes were designed by BBA Architects & Planners and constructed
by Carter Construction with building work taking just over a year from the
first spade being dug to handover.
