Bay of Islands 36 Hole Strokeplay Results
Waitangi Golf Club
Saturday, August 25, 2012
Congratulations to Luke Brown from The Pines, winner of the inaugural Bay of Islands 36 Hole Strokeplay
Championship presented by Titleist / Footjoy. Played in magnificent conditions and with the course well
groomed and greens running pure and fast, many golfers still struggled with the speed and subtle breaks on
the greens. There were just enough challenging holes to offset the numerous birdie opportunities but it was
Waipu’s Chase McKeown who opened with a 3 under 69 in the morning round courtesy of 6 birdies against
3 bogies. Close behind were Kaitaia’s Brett Dormer on 71 and Luke Brown on 72 to make it a 3 horse race
initially.
In round 2 McKeown birdied 2 of the first 3 holes to get to 5 under but came unglued with a bogey at 4, a
triple bogey at 6 and double bogeys at 11 and 14 to end his chances. Dormer opened his 2nd 18 with a birdie
at the first to get to 2 under before bogeys at 5, 6 and 8 dropped him back but still in with a chance. In the
end, a bogey at 16, double at 17 and a bogey at 18 likely cost him the title. Brown on the other hand got to 2
under after 3 before a double bogey at the 5th and a bogey at the 11th looked to hurt his chances but even par
over the final 7 holes was enough to seal the title.
For the Waitangi Golf Club it was their first opportunity to test a top quality field in a strokeplay event
against the newly renovated holes on the course with the par 5 11th and the lengthened par 3 6th proving to
be incredibly challenging. For the 2013 event, the Club should have its new 3rd green and surrounds in play
as well as a couple of new teeing areas on other holes to add a bit of strength to the layout off the black tees.
