FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
General Information

What is the purpose of an industrial training?
Answer: Industrial training is intended to:
 extend the student's already gained theoretical knowledge by putting it into practice,
and provide insight to the future courses
 provide an introduction to real-world practices of industrial engineering and
organizational problems in an industrial company
 help the student to gain an idea about the sector that s/he performed the training
 provide students an opportunity to show themselves to the professionals

Is "performing” the training, sufficient to be registered to IENG210/310/410 courses?
Answer: No, they are different! You will be registered to IENG210/310/410 courses if
 during the training at least 5 departments in the company were visited
 the Log-Book is signed by the company and returned to Department in a sealed &
stamped envelope
 an official company fax stating that the student successfully completed the training,
including period of training, is submitted
 the following material is submitted to the Secretary on time:
 IENG210: the report + report CD + official fax of the firm specifying the dates of
your training + Log-Book in sealed & stamped envelope.
 IENG310: the report + report CD + official fax of the firm specifying the dates of
your training + Log-Book in sealed & stamped envelope.
 IENG410: the report + report CD + “IE Problem” report + “IE Problem” CD +
official fax of the firm specifying the dates of your training + Log-Book in sealed &
stamped envelope

What are the pre-requisites for IENG210?
Answer: The course IENG112 (Introduction to Industrial Engineering) should be taken
earlier.

What are the pre-requisites for IENG310?
Answer: All freshman year courses must be taken & IENG210 completed.

What are the pre-requisites for IENG410?
Answer: A student can apply to have the third industrial training if
 s/he completed IENG310
 s/he has taken at least 3 of the following 5 courses
IENG301 Fundamentals of Work Study and Ergonomics
IENG313 Operations Research I
IENG323 Engineering Economy
IENG332 Production Planning I
IENG372 Information Systems and Technology

What is the main difference between the industrial training courses?
Answer: While the first two industrial trainings are mainly based on the general observations
in the company, the third industrial training is more related to the industrial engineering
applications. During IENG410, each student is expected to identify, formulate and find a
satisfactory solution to an Industrial Engineering Problem (IE PROBLEM) in the company.
The IE PROBLEM should be presented in an additional complete report.

Under which circumstances must an industrial training be repeated?
Answer: An industrial training must be repeated if
 The industrial training report evaluation results "Unsatisfactory".
 The industrial training Log-Book, Letter of Acceptance, Report(s) or any other
written/electronic materials are missing or not submitted on time.
 Cheating is detected (disciplinary action will follow).

What happens if a student completes all courses required for graduation but not yet
received “S” from an industrial training (IT) course?
Answer: ITs are zero credited courses therefore student’s graduation will be delayed.

Is it possible for a transfer student to be exempted from an industrial training course if
the training had already been made in the earlier program?
Answer: Exemption is not possible unless the transfer student is from other Industrial
Engineering program.
The Company

Which companies are allowed for the training?
Answer: The company should satisfy the following criteria:
 IENG210: A “discrete-part manufacturing” company (with assembling) with at least
50 personnel of which minimum 2 Engineers (from any discipline).
 IENG310: A “discrete-part manufacturing” company (with assembling) with at least
50 personnel of which minimum 2 Engineers (at least one should be IE).
 IENG410: It can be a “discrete-part manufacturing” or “process type production” or a
“service production” company. For “discrete manufacturing” or “process type
production” companies, there should be at least 50 personnel of which minimum 4
Engineers (at least one should be IE). For “service production” companies there
should be at least 25 personnel of which 4 Engineers (at least one should be IE. For
the remaining 3, MBA holding professionals can be accepted, if any).
 “Discrete-parts manufacturing” involves asembling operations (e.g. automotive,
white goods, electronics, furniture, house products, machine parts, garment etc.).
 “Process industry” (e.g. milk – coke - ayran – beer – wine – oil - cheese – biscuit –
chewing gum - hot dog – salt – sugar - jewellery – fertilizer – textile – weaving paint – paper - petroleum – timber – medical drugs – cosmetics – pharmaceuticals chemical - shampoo – soap - iron – steel - tube – glass – ceramic – cement - pipe –
rubber – tire etc.).
 “Service sector” (e.g. banking – consulting – finance – health – tourism – software transport – hospitals - communication (like TT/Turkcell/Avea/Vodafone etc.)
 The Company should be functioning actively during the period of training.

Is it possible to have an industrial training in a company that does not employ an
industrial engineer?
Answer: No! Because working with an industrial engineer in a real work place is a crucial
advantage and provides great opportunity for you to observe the industrial
engineering studies and problems, and receive a lot of useful feedback.

Who is responsible from finding an appropriate training place?
Answer: Students themselves as this is an important part of your education.

Is there any application deadline, which is set by the companies, or period in which the
applications for having an industrial training is accepted?
Answer: Some of the companies in Turkey have such periods. It is strongly recommended
that students apply as early as possible.

Is it possible to perform industrial training in the Turkish Republic of Northern
Cyprus?
Answer: There are limited facilities located in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
(TRNC) that industrial engineering applications can be observed. Thus the students
are advised to search for companies located in Turkey or other larger countries.

What is the advantage of having an industrial training in a well-known, large-scale and
technologically advanced company?
Answer: The greatest advantage is to learn, get experience, and have the opportunity to be
employed by the company after graduation. Also a CV containing experience in
such a company has better chance in recruitment.

Is it possible to perform any training in the same facility?
Answer: No! But if the company has other factories at a different location and producing
different products, it is possible. For example, Arcelik has several factories located
in Ankara, Istanbul, Eskisehir, etc. All these factories produce different products
such as washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers etc.

Can a company be altered after the industrial training starts?
Answer: Yes! This is possible if the student:
 Provides/Documents valid reasons that will be approved by the Department
 Re-follows the steps necessary to apply for an industrial training in the new company,
and obtains the Department's approval.
 Duration spent in the first company can not be counted for the second.
Application Procedure

How to apply for an industrial training?
Answer: Students should perform the following steps:
1. Finding an acceptable company is an important part of your education, therefore
students themselves should search for and apply to such companies.
2. Students should fill the FUF form (Follow-Up Form) completely. For at most 3
companies the following information must be included:
 Name and the address of the company, telephone-fax no.s, web and e-mail
addresses.
 Employment data (number of workers, engineers, and industrial engineers).
 Nature of the business that the company is operating.
 A list of main products of the company.
3. After the proposed company(s) is evaluated and approved by the Department,
students will be given, if the company requires, an Authorization Letter indicating
that the applicant is a student in the Department and must perform this training etc.
4. Because of the “trainee insurance law” (TR No 5510), students that are planning to
perform any of their industrial training in Turkey or Turkish Republic of Northern
Cyprus must read the procedure provided at the Department web page
(http://ie.emu.edu.tr/lec/ann.php?lec=INDUSTRIAL+TRAINING)
and
act
accordingly.
5. Students should obtain Industrial Training (IT) Log-Book, and IT Booklet from the
University bookstore (Deniz Shop).
6. Log-Books should be stamped by the Department Secretary.
Training Period

What is the duration of an industrial training?
Answer: It differs for each training. Durations of each training:
 IENG210: Minimum of 10 working days
 IENG310: Minimum of 15 working days
 IENG210: Minimum of 20 working days

Is it possible to continue training on Saturdays too? (Thursday for Islamic Calendar)
Answer: Only if the company confirms it by sending us an official fax (+90 392 630 2988)

Is it possible to have an industrial training during the night-shift?
Answer: No! Generally only production departments work during the night-shift. The
activities of departments like accounting, purchasing, sales, marketing etc., can only
be examined during the normal day shift.

What are the normal periods to perform IENG210, IENG310 and IENG410?
Answer: If the pre-requisite conditions are satisfied, Summer or Winter breaks at the end of
Freshman (1st year), Sophomore (2nd year) and Junior (3rd year) years, respectively.
Since you have to perform 3 industrial trainings and they are pre-requisite to some
core courses, you should plan them much earlier. Otherwise may mean risking your
graduation time.

Can an industrial training be done in parallel to Summer School?
Answer: No!

Is it possible to perform industrial training after the Summer School?
Answer: Yes, if there are enough working days to complete the training before the start of the
course registration period announced by the University.

Is it possible to perform an industrial training during the Winter Break?
Answer: Yes, if there are enough working days to complete the training before the start of the
course registration period, announced by the University, for the Spring semester.

Can an industrial training period be split into two parts?
Answer: Normally not! Training should be continuous and completed within a single period.
On the other hand, for the reasons like unexpected production shutdown in the
factory, or health reasons etc. the student will be permitted to split the training into
two parts only. In such cases valid documentation and Departmental approval is
needed.

Is it possible to perform two industrial trainings in the same Summer break?
Answer: Yes, but the academic pre-requisites conditions for both trainings should be
satisfied.
Log-Book

What is a Log-Book?
Answer: The Log-Book is a booklet prepared to keep a record of activities of the student and
a detailed evaluation of the student's work during the training period. The Log-Book should
be stamped by the Department Secretary before going for the training. The Questions and
Tasks to be answered are also in this booklet. The student’s trainee Supervisor in the
company should complete all the information requested in the Log-Book.

Where can I buy the Log-Book?
Answer: It’s available in the University bookstore (Deniz Shop). Please be aware that there
are other similar looking Log-Books in the shelves. Be careful not to buy a wrong Log-Book!

How should a Log-Book be returned to the Department?
Answer: The Log-Books will be handed to Department Secretary by the students. It should
be in a sealed & stamped envelope and signed by the Company since it has confidential
information about the students.
Industrial Training (IT) Booklet

What is the aim of the Industrial Training BOOKLET?
Answer: The IT Booklet is (prepared in November 2007) to guide the Industrial Engineering
students in their industrial training. Although some parts of the IT Booklet need updating the
following items will be very useful for you:
 IE topic explanations,
 Instructions for report writing.

Where can I obtain an Industrial Training Booklet?
Answer: It is also available for sale in the University bookstore (Deniz Shop).
The Report

What is the aim of Industrial Training Report?
Answer: The industrial training Report is a printed document, which presents the study you
performed in the training period. It enables the evaluator of your report to
understand what you have done during training and grade your performance.

What must be the language of the industrial training report?
Answer: English.

What should be the format and writing style of the report?
 Answer: In your report Chapter and Section/Subsection numbers and headings should
exactly be the same as the ones written in front of each Question/Task in the Log-Book.
The report must be prepared in accordance with the technical report writing specifications
given in the Department Web page (http://ie.emu.edu.tr/reportw/?sub=CO).

Is it possible to use Turkish/Persian etc. documents in the report?
Answer: All the documents in the report should be in English. The documents in other
languages can also be included but complete translation of the content must be provided.
The meaning of significant words other than English should also be given in the Glossary.

When to submit the IT Reports to the Department?
Answer: The report submission date is the last day of the Course Add/Drop Period
announced by the University.

How are the IT Reports evaluated?
Answer: The IT report evaluation is based on:
 The answers you have given to the Questions (Q) & Tasks (T) provided at the back of
the Log-Book (for IENG410; IE Problem Report will also be evaluated).
 The format and writing style of the report.

Is it sufficient to provide a Reference List in the report?
Answer: No! The Reference List and the text of the report should be linked, i.e. in the report
the work of others should be referred in the Reference List.

What are the grade limits for a Report to be Satisfactory, Incomplete or Unsatisfactory?
Answer: The following grade limits apply for all three trainings:
 Passing limits: Q part: At least 2.0 to Pass. T part: At least 2.5 to Pass.
 Incomplete limits: Q part: Between 1.0 – 2.0. T part: Between 1.5 – 2.5.
 Failing limits: Q part: Below 1.0 Fails. T part: Below 1.5 Fails.
 For IENG410: Additional Report of IE PROBLEM: Incomplete is given for the
grades between 2.0 – 3.0. Above 3.0 Passes, below 2.0 Fails.
 You have to pass both of the “Q part” and “T part” separately, i.e., failing only
from Q part or T part means failing from the training. Also for IENG410 failing
from IE PROBLEM report means failing from the training.
 Be aware that due to the limits above, your report may Fail right after the first
evaluation of the evaluator.
 Failing from Report means repetition of the training

What happens if I do not provide answers for some Questions (Q) or Tasks (T)?
Answer: For every unanswered Q and/or T, you will lose the points of your best graded Q
and/or T, respectively. Therefore you should do your best to answer every Q and T.

If my Report is graded Incomplete, how many chances will I be given to improve it?
Answer: Only one chance is given for the “Incomplete” reports to be improved.

If the Company does not give you some data/information needed in the report?
Answer: No problem, just write this in your report, assume/estimate the missing data and
continue answering. But you should be aware that for every unanswered Question and/or
Task, you will lose the points of your best graded Question and/or Task, respectively.

What’s the importance of filling page 8 of the Log-Book?
Answer. Page 8 of the Log-Book is dedicated for the managers/engineers coming from
Industrial Engineering or a closely related field. Students performing their training in Turkey
or N. Cyprus should ask these manager/engineers to go through this page and fill it if they are
interested to give a seminar (IENG444 course) to our students in English. The seminars
should be about real life applications of Industrial Engineering.

What will happen if you copy some parts from other student’s report?
Answer: Cheating from other’s reports is easily recognized by the software. You will
receive a “U” grade, which means you will have to repeat the Industrial Training.
Additionally you will be reported to EMU Student Disciplinary Committee. Minimum
penalty given for such circumstances is 35 days dismissal from the University.
