Hilarious Mum Always makes sad times alright. Her smile makes me glad. Opening Activity: Remind the children of the adjectives they thought of about their Mums Remind the children of the poem we read on the board Explain that today we will be writing a different kind of poem, a haiku Haiku o A Haiku is a special kind of poem that lets us say a lot with just a few words. We use just a few very special words to tell someone how we feel or describe things that we are interested in. In this case, we will be using a Haiku to tell our Mums how they make us feel as a gift for Mothers’ Day. This is really special because Haikus are kind of tricky, and I bet our Mums will be so surprised and proud when we use this form of poetry to tell them how much we love them! o Here is what a Haiku looks like: My beautiful Mum Is just like the brilliant Sun She always shines bright. Have a student read the poem out loud. –Are there any rhyming words in this poem? –Is the poem very long? –Do we repeat any lines in the poem? (No) This poem is special because there it doesn’t need any rhyming words and it is very short. Every Haiku is only three lines long and its form comes from syllables. –Do you know what syllables are? (Syllables are chunks of sounds within words. You can hear them best when you clap to the words you use—Demonstrate—food (clap) has one syllable because it has one chunk of sound. –Funny (clap clap) has two syllables because it has two chunks of sound, use other examples as necessary). In each line of this poem, there has to be a certain number of syllables. In every first line, there has to be five syllables.—check with the poem on the board---In every second line, there has to be seven syllables—check with the poem on the board---In every third line there has to be five syllables. (write the number of syllables next to each line) That is what makes a Haiku. Haiku for Mum o We are going to write our own Haiku for our Mums. (Pass out worksheets) First, I want everyone to do a little bit of brainstorming, like we did the other day, and read the list of words that you might use to describe your Mum, then pick the one that you think is best and put a ring around it. Second, some of you have another list of images, or animals, or places that might remind you of your Mum, while others of you have a blank space. Those with a blank space, think of your own image and write it in the space. Those with a list, read the words and pick the one that reminds you most of your Mum. Then we have one more last list of feelings that our Mum might make us have. Our Mum might make us feel Happy, Loved, Amazing…read through the last list and circle the word you like best there. When you are done, use the words you have chosen to start writing a Haiku. You have space to make two Haiku poems, so you have plenty of room to practice if you need it. If you are having trouble with the words, raise your hand. Make sure that you have 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second line, and 5 in the last line. Once you are done with your Haiku, we are going to write our poems inside cards for our mums and draw pictures for them that illustrate our poems.
