Five Day Flower workshop with Marcel Desbiens
Materials List
Student’s equipment:
The usual equipment for painting with oil colours:
1 Easel (small for table or standing large)
1 non absorbent surface panel for mixing paint (average 30x30cm or more) ex: wooden palette,
glass pane, Perspex
A set of flat brushes, various size, firm and soft bristle, a rigger and a soft mop brush
1 mixing palette knife
Oil colours Artist quality:
The usual primary colours: Blue Phthalo or cobalt, Yellow cadmium light or lemon Yellow,
Magenta or alizarin, Titanium white, zinc white and Ivory black and any colour you already
have.
1 litre brush cleaning turps with 2-3 glass jar (250ml) and lid
1 good quality roll of paper towel (Preferably Handee)
1 plastic container with lid at least 2 litres
Plastic bags – to dispose of your rubbish each day
Painting mediums:
Any painting medium you already have or 100ml Liquin Original (Winsor Newton) or Liquol (Art
Spectrum), linseed oil and turps: Odourless solvent or any turps.
Please note:
I will provide the Oil and Acrylic paper canvas Canson A3 to paint on
($1.00 each) and the image to paint. I will also have some special
brushes for sale and painting medium if you need it.

Course outline
Marcel has an enormous in-depth knowledge for the medium of oil and generously shares his vast
expertise on the subject of painting flowers in oil. Join him on a painting adventure where he will reveal
his secrets of creating exquisite luminous flower paintings using his signature techniques. He will guide
you with demonstrations and provide you the technical knowledge on how to build a 3D impression
from a 2D monochrome layer to full colour from an underpainting. Also learn how to produce optical
effects by glazing with multiple transparent layers of colours, bringing your paintings to life! You will
gain a thorough understanding and master the techniques of painting with opaque and transparent
colours. You will build confidence and new skills to master these techniques. You will create a unique
personal composition of your paintings.
What you will learn:

Paint layers in a series of exercises followed by demonstrations by Marcel using primers, alkydresin or Acrylic and oil.
About painting mediums and colours (transparent and opaque)
Build a 3D impression from a 2D monochrome layer to full colour from an underpainting.
Balance tones for a harmonious outcome.
Create a unique personal composition for your painting.
Understand the nuances of the Flemish and Venetian styles.
Produce optical effects by glazing with multiple transparent layers of colour.
Throughout this course you will build confidence and the skills to master these techniques.
