Philosophy in Music Project
The main focus of this project is analysis of lyrics in a popular song with
focus on a particular branch of philosophy. The lyrics should somehow convey a
philosophical idea, one that may be directly related to a specific philosopher or
school of philosophy. Your job is to explain how the lyrics, such as a verse or chorus,
conveys or reflects the philosophical idea.
Project Process
1. Select a song that you believe embraces a philosophical idea.
2. Print the lyrics
3. Search for any information available about the artist’s inspiration for the song.
4. Research the philosopher/school of philosophy this relates to.
5. Write a 250-400 word paper explaining the relationship between the lyrics and
the philosophy.
All projects must fulfill the following rubric
1. Cover page with song title, band name, and philosophic quote (one that
relates to the lyrics somehow)
10 points: attractiveness/neatness/style
2. Printed lyrics (cut and paste into a word document and select appealing
font)
10 points: attractiveness/neatness
3. Synopsis of the general philosophy
10 points: scope and ability to explain in your own words
4. Biography of most well-known philosopher or school of philosophy
associated with this work of art.
10 points: scope and ability to explain in your own words
5. Analysis of song and the philosophy.
40 points: analysis explaining certain phrases in the lyrics and how
this reflects the philosophy. Include artist’s views when possible.
