Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Director of Pharmacy Operations - Las Vegas, at the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) is responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of an assigned pharmacy location including personnel supervision, business management, purchasing, and regulatory interpretation and implementation. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for establishing and managing new pharmacy facilities in Las Vegas to include identifying and securing locations, obtaining required licenses, ordering inventory, hiring staff, and establishing policies and procedures for each location. The position reports to the Chair, Pharmacology Department. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 30% - Pharmaceutical Orders and Prescriptions Process pharmaceutical orders from practitioners; read prescriptions and orders; verify completeness and legibility Screen and determine validity in accordance with federal and state regulations, agency policies and applicable accreditation standards Review information related to cost, indications for use, patient related information, drug interactions and adverse effects in order to identify and prevent potential problems Complete patient records with pharmaceutical history Profile orders and prescriptions and record current information Certify prescriptions and orders for amount per dose, frequency and duration of therapy Complete authorization documentation Provide instructions and training to pharmacy technicians for filling prescriptions and orders and to ensure orders are properly filled 30% - General Business Management of Assigned Pharmacy and Las Vegas Pharmacies Manage general business operations of assigned pharmacy including purchases (drug and other) and interpreting formulas Maintain fiscal records of pharmaceutical usage and cost of medications used by each pharmacy Provide business office with cost or billing information in order to comply with federal, state or accreditation requirements Maintain an inventory and purchasing system Oversee general business operations of all Las Vegas pharmacy locations to include review and analysis of purchasing trends in order to keep profitability margins at an acceptable range Serve as liaison between Chair and Las Vegas Pharmacy Managers and staff 20% - Site Selection and Management Review new locations and draft floor plans to maximize space and efficiency Work with building managers at leased or purchased sites to ensure “build-out” and maintenance is performed in a professional, efficient and timely manner Position Description – Director, Pharmacy Operations – Las Vegas Page 3 15% - Personnel Administration Manage and evaluate staff and supervise and instruct students, interns and medical residents Assist in interviewing and hiring staff for Las Vegas pharmacy locations Communicate existing and new legal requirements to Las Vegas faculty and staff Communicate and resolve compliance issues with Las Vegas locations 5% - Licensing/Rules and Regulations Enforcement Assist in all initial application processes, i.e., Nevada State Board of Pharmacy, Federal Department of Drug Enforcement Administration (FDDEA) for each new location; ensure that Las Vegas pharmacies are current with all license renewals and requirements Stay abreast of any new rules and regulations regarding the industry. Level of Freedom: It is a requirement of the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy that this position (s) exist within UNSOM. The incumbent processes pharmaceutical orders and prescriptions, maintains records on usage and cost, establishes drug quality specifications, maintains an inventory and purchasing system, and advises professional health care staff and consumers on current pharmacology in order to maximize the quality of patient care. The Director is responsible for the business operations of an assigned pharmacy and additional management oversight of all Las Vegas pharmacy locations. The Director has the freedom to seek and recommend vendors that would increase revenue of all pharmacy locations. The Director not only has responsibility for assigned physical location, but all pharmacies in Las Vegas that UNSOM operates. The position makes recommendations on new facilities and layouts to the Chair for final approval. Impact: The Director has an immediate and crucial impact on patient health care. Failure to perform as expected could result in substandard patient care and could open UNSOM and the University to liability issues. Failure to efficiently manage not only the assigned physical site, but all locations in Las Vegas, would result in significant financial losses to UNSOM and the University. 4.
