9th Grade POSTER Health Enhancement Over the Counter (OTC) Research *****Answer these questions on a separate sheet of paper!!***** This project is designed enhance your understanding of 5 W’s of legal drugs (Who, What, When, Where, & Why)? Legal drugs are substances that are used to treat or prevent diseases. They are also used to relieve; pains, to help control physical and mental ailments, and even to help diagnose illnesses. You will develop your understanding by researching information based on the outline below. This POSTER PROJECT will help the reader understand what happens when a person becomes accustom to over the counter drugs that exist in our everyday markets & pharmacies. You will also elaborate about the Physiological dependence (a condition that occurs over time & causes user to believe that the drug is needed in order to feel good or function normally) if one exists with your product. Directions: go to a local market or grocery store and read the materials listed on any OTC product. If you have some in the medicine cabinet at home that is fine. DO NOT BRING DRUGS TO SCHOOL, only bring box! Use information from the outline below to answer specific questions and type information in WORD document by following directions. Latency Period: The amount of time it takes from ingesting a substance, until you begin to feel its effect. “The larger amount of a substance in blood stream the stronger the effects.” -An individual can reach the maximum positive effect dose but their level still continue rise resulting negative side effects. Drug Interactions Additive: Occurs when two or more drugs combine to produce an effect greater than effect of either drug taken alone. Additive: 1 + 1= 2 Synergistic (hyper-additive): 1+1=6 Potentiatinga drug with no effect is combined with another drug to cause a toxic effect.
