CALIFORNIA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, POMONA ACADEMIC SENATE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS COMMITTEE REPORT TO THE ACADEMIC SENATE AP-003-145 Change Name of Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology to Bachelor of Science in Electronic System Engineering Technology Academic Programs Committee Date: Executive Committee Received and Forwarded Date: March 4, 2015 Academic Senate Date: March 11, 2015 First Reading AP-003-145, Change Name of Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology to Bachelor of Science in Electronic System Engineering Technology 2 BACKGROUND: The College of Engineering has submitted a proposal for change of name for a BSET in electronics and computer engineering to BSET in electronics systems engineering degree offered in the Engineering Technology department. . Electronic systems will cover all fields in the electronic industry and provide a perfect updated electronic engineering technology program. Texas A&M University recently chose the ‘Electronic Systems’ name to denote a holistic program in the field of electronic and computer engineering technology with the most current courses. Other universities around the nation such as RIT also offer a program under such a name. RESOURCES CONSULTED: Mahyar Amouzegar, Dean College of Engineering. Associate Provost DISCUSSION: A change name of bachelor of science in electronics and computer engineering technology to bachelor of science in electronic system engineering technology is proposed by the College of engineering. The new name reflects the recent curricula update, and will help the program to respond to the needs and expectations of students and industries. Originally, there were three programs in ET: electronic and computer, construction engineering, and general/Mechanical-manufacturing. During the 2014-2015 academic year, the construction engineering is moved to be merged with civil engineering program. With the departure of construction engineering, only two programs are left. Through the process, the ET department went through an extensive update/revision of its remaining two programs in order to help manage the department more efficiently, and to help the department to respond to the needs and expectations of local and national industry need. In addition, during the last accreditation visit in 2011, a recommendation was made to reduce the high number of technical elective courses and make some of these courses required. These recent revisions result in today’s more modern, up-to-date ET programs. Out of the two existing programs, one of them is now focused on both electronic and mechanical programs (name change requested in a separate referral) , and the other will be focused on electronics only (current referral). AP-003-145, Change Name of Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology to Bachelor of Science in Electronic System Engineering Technology 3 Unlike the current name, electronic systems will cover all fields in the electronic industry and will provide a perfect updated electronic engineering technology program. Texas A&M University has one of the finest programs in the field of electronics engineering technology and has a recently updates curriculum has chosen the “Electronic Systems” name to denote a holistic program in the field of electronic and computer engineering technology with the most current courses such as digital communication, advanced network, wireless communication, local and metropolitan area network, power system, and embedded system. Other similar programs nation-wide also offer programs with such a name. The department would like to have a name that demonstrates that the department offers both electronic and mechanical programs. The new name of “Electro-Mechanical” will fully represent the programs that are offered within the department and will be selfexplanatory for students who would like to apply to any of these programs. RECOMMENDATION: The Academic Programs Committee recommends approval of the Change Name of Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology to Bachelor of Science in Electronic System Engineering Technology.
