DVD Screening: Saving Face
A journey to heal. A fight for justice

This four hour work-shop will provide an overview of FDV in
our community, with a specialised focus on the culturally and
linguistically diverse community (CaLD). The workshop will
include case-studies and knowledge on gender-based and
honour based violence. Issues such as forced marriages,
female genital mutilation and honour killings will be covered.
This screening is a realistic view of strong women in Pakistan
and how they survived acid attacks. Survivors are physically
and emotionally scarred. Many reported assailants, typically
a husband or someone else close to the victim receive
minimal punishment from the state. This is a story of a
doctor who helps victims of such attacks. This interactive
seminar will look at acid attacks from within the concept of
gender based violence in the CaLD community.

The effects of FDV on children and their family
and effective ways to respond

An introductory course on family and domestic violence for
WA Health workers. This training will equip participants with
the basic skills, knowledge and understanding to effectively
identify a client who may be in an abusive relationship and
respond appropriately. This course will address the role of
WA Health professionals in identifying and responding to
FDV.
This training is co-facilitated with the Statewide Protection of
Children Coordination Unit (SPOCC). The training will look at
the impact of family and domestic violence on children
including how it affects the mother/child relationship.
Building confidence in asking screening questions and in
safety planning will also be covered.

Professional Development Update

An introductory course on female genital mutilation (FGM)
for health workers and other professionals who may come
across women affected by FGM. This course will focus on the
reasons why such a practice continues to exist, and will
equip the participants with knowledge and techniques to
practice in a culturally sensitive manner.
This two and a half hour workshop will explore the
contentious issue of forced marriages globally and locally.
The workshop will provide information on why such forms of
violence occur and how we can provide assistance to victims.
Case studies will be presented as well as group work.
This three hour workshop will introduce participants to
complex issues pertaining to the refugee and asylum seeker
community. The workshop will discuss the lifelong effects of
violence and trauma on the CaLD community, and provide a
historical and sociological synopsis behind this violence.
Furthermore, the workshop will equip participants with skills
whilst working with this high-need population.

Understanding the needs of Aboriginal Clients

This training is co-facilitated with the Sexual Assault
Resource Centre. This three-hour workshop will equip
participants with an understanding of trauma, culturally
appropriate ways of responding to victims of family and
domestic violence and points to consider when working with
Aboriginal clients.

and legal facts which are vital to know when responding to
clients experiencing family and domestic violence.

An overview of what constitutes elder abuse, how people
might recognise it and what they could do to help a person
experiencing it. This training is underpinned by the
empowerment model of advocacy.

Risk Assessment and Safety Planning

In this three hour work-shop, participants will use case
studies to gain an understanding of how to undertake a
comprehensive risk assessment and assess a client’s safety.
The training also provides information on safety planning,
including safety with technology and safety for children. It is
a pre-requisite that participants have either completed the
FDV ELearning package or have prior knowledge in family
and domestic violence.
This full day program presents a variety of guest speakers
who will provide updates and recent developments on family
and domestic violence (FDV) polices, service updates, legal
reforms, and more. The program primarily targets Social
Workers, however, expressions of interest are also invited by
other WA Health sector staff including Doctors, Midwives,
Nurses, Community Child Health Nurses, and those working
with families and children.
