ENTRY OF OUR LORD INTO JERUSALEM. PALM SUNDAY. Hieromartyr Artemon, Presbyter, of Laodicea in Syria (303). Martyr Crescens, of Myra in Lycia. Woman Martyr Thomaïs of Alexandria (5th c.). Epistle: Philippians 4:4-9 Gospel: John 12:1-18 Palm Sunday Troparion – Tone 1 By raising Lazarus from the dead before Thy Passion, Thou didst confirm the universal resurrection, O Christ God. Like the children with the palms of victory, we cry out to Thee, O Vanquisher of Death: “Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He that comes in the Name of the Lord!” Holy Week Each day of Holy Week has its own theme: Monday is that of the sterile fig tree which yields no fruit and is condemned. On Tuesday the accent is on the vigilance of the wise virgins who, unlike their foolish sisters, were ready when the Lord came to them. The focus of Wednesday is the fallen woman who repents. The liturgical services emphasize the comparison between the sinful harlot who is saved, to Judas, a chosen apostle who is lost. The one gives her wealth to Christ and kisses his feet; the other betrays Christ for money with a kiss. This year, Holy Trinity is adding a beautiful and significant service to Holy Week: Bridegroom Matins, which we will serve at the very beginning of the week, the evening of Palm Sunday. It offers a unique reflection on the Passion. The Gospel reading describes Christ confronting His enemies and publicly refuting them. He is far from the “sweet Jesus” of popular imagery; He speaks with clarity about the end of this age. The themes are Judgment and The End. The special hymns portray Christ as the Bridegroom, preparing the way for a marriage feast in His Kingdom. We are exhorted to be ready for the marriage feast by being “watchful” like the Wise Virgins in the parable -- by showing others the same love and mercy that He shows us.
